President Donald Trump loves to boast about his business acumen and the countrys strong economy under his watch. But one key region widely believed to have handed him the presidency in 2016 declared itself on Tuesday night to be less than impressed.
The Rust Belt, which played a crucial role in cementing Trumps 2016 victory, went largely for Democrats in the midterms. And thats a bad omen for Trumps 2020 hopes, both Democratic and Republican operatives said. Voters in Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania broadly rejected Republican candidates in statewide races and sent a raft of Democrats to the House of Representatives from the suburbs of Philadelphia, Detroit and Milwaukee.
The result gives renewed hope for 2020 to Democrats still feeling stung by Trump's surprise wins in those crucial states.
I think the Midwest is the big story, Jennifer Palmieri, director of communications for Hillary Clintons 2016 presidential campaign, told VICE News. When you look at those Midwest wins, you can more than see a path for how a Democrat can win in 2020.

In a victory speech as he cruised to re-election Tuesday night, longtime Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown [photo above] called on his fellow Democrats to look to his region as a model for future victory.
Let our country our nation's citizens, our Democratic Party, my fellow elected officials all over the country let them all cast their eyes toward the heartland, to the industrial Midwest," Brown said.
Trump shocked pundits in 2016 by cruising to victories in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin states once considered keystones in an impenetrable Blue Wall. But the 2018 results paint the midwest as a trouble spot for Trumps re-election, said Michael Steel, a senior policy and communications advisor to Jeb Bushs 2016 presidential run.

A lot of us on DU have been saying the same thing. The Democratic Party cannot keep treating the Midwest as "flyover states." That kind of thinking is how we ended up with the mass of red between two blue coasts on our country's map.
Every Midwestern state has active hard-working Democrats who are fighting to overcome the GOP's grip. This election highlights the bright spots in PA, OH, MI and IL and we have to keep encouraging these efforts. The Midwest will go blue again, and it will win us back the Senate. With a little bit of encouragement from the national party, Dems in the Midwest will defeat the orange asshole in 2020!

(32,579 posts)Personally I'm hoping the electronic voting machines all get scrapped. We should go back to paper ballots and allow voters in every state to mail them in early. I wish we had early voting in Pennsylvania.

(6,373 posts)He won Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania by a combined 80,000 votes. That's unfathomably thin, and he has no margin for error in those states come 2020. He's going to have a very difficult time replicating those numbers and if the Democratic candidate can just swing those three states back, it puts us over 270.

What happened in 2016? Think about what really happened with our Message. This time we had a different fifty state strategy approach, funny thing is,is it will always work.
The Media wants their bullcrap Horse Race. Perez did not fall for it.

(32,579 posts)But we have to keep a sharp eye out for all the GOP's cheating ways. We can never stop watching them, they'll cheat every chance they get. The message is important but so is our constant vigilance.

(15,374 posts)That some of these elections were not blow-outs. Walker lost by 1.2% of the vote - after passing a law that said you had to be within 1% of the winner to be able to do a recount (Nelson laugh - Ha-hah!). Democrats really can't afford to ignore these states.

(32,579 posts)I'd like to see Obama and/or Biden come back to the Senate in 2020. Wouldn't that be awesome? We'd get so much done for ALL Americans then!
Once the TrumpHumpers see that they have nothing to fear with the Dems in charge, I believe they'll turn their backs on the orange asshole for good. What has he done for them? By 2020 what will he have done for them? Zippo.
