Gotta hand it to her.
She is the perfect woman in exactly the right place at exactly the right time.
Her wisdom is going to be needed to steer the democratic majority through what will surely be turbulent waters.

(40 posts)It's foolish to think of attacking Pelosi. We need her as speaker. She is very savvy and experienced at getting things done that a less experienced speaker wouldn't. Don't be stupid and attack her. That's what dotard wants. He's afraid of Nancy as he should be. k

(58,785 posts)we can take that as a sign that she feels our nation is stabilized and moving forward again.
She was going to retire in 2016, confident with President Hillary Clinton things would be in good hands. But she stayed to do what she could to protect the nation -- with a huge focus on saving the ACA for the 300M people it provides protections, not just coverage, to.
Now she's doing the same -- staying for many reasons, but with restoring health to the ACA, and hopefully making some of the deferred expansions and adjustments, a big priority.
Btw, from the midterms, which just keep giving:
Tuesday was huge for the Medicaid program, said Katherine Howitt, associate director of policy at Community Catalyst, a Boston-based advocacy group. The overall message is that the electorate does not see this as a Democrat or GOP issue but as an issue of basic fairness, access to care and pocketbook issue. Medicaid is working and is something Americans want to protect.

(14,570 posts)we might end up with President Pelosi.
That said, I'm nearly 60 and have a very knowledge-heavy technical position. I'm hiring a newbie to transfer all that institutional knowledge to over the next six years.
I don't think Pelosi has six years before she gets into the 'bad old' stage of life, though like Ginsberg she could surprise us. But the warranty on your body ends pretty much at age 60. It ain't 'the new 40.' It is sixty. You, at best, have maybe 20 good years left. And Nancy is 79, I believe.
She will be the speaker, and should - for a time. But the whole top Dem power structure needs to be bringing along these younger people. That has been one of the major faults of this party - the leadership is very much on the old side, and we have some really, really good younger Dems that are now in office, but someone needs to reach down and help them grow. Look at Acacio-Cortez. She has made some fundamental faux-pas - just because she doesn't seem to have anyone telling her, hey, maybe you should say it this way. Look at Sharice Davids in KS Dist. 4. Two Muslim members of Congress now. Lots of women.
C'mon Dem leaders, bring these young ones along - really begin transferring the institutional knowledge. No one is ever really ready for a high leadership position, are they? But what we can say is that a person of quality and character will grow into the position rapidly.
************
As to this whole thread, allow me a rhetorical question for all of you: Is anyone really ready to be Speaker? Majority Whip? Majority Leader? Minority Whip, Minority Leader.....President?
I mean, look at Obama - arguably the BEST president of my lifetime, in my eyes right up there with FDR and even Kennedy. Hell, he was young and very untried when he was elected. We can even say unready. Maybe. But his character...that carried him, and he rapidly grew into a great president. Think about when the guy took office - the world's economy was literally falling apart. He had like NO room for any kind of 'shakedown cruise.' He had to hit the ground running, and he DID. He surrounded himself with good, solid, very smart people and got in there and did the job. He saved this world from depression and gave us a good start toward a national health care system - yeah, needs improvement, but was a heck of a lot better than what we had.
So can we really say these young people 'aren't ready?' Instead, should we look for the character, the moral basis, that will allow them to move forward on principle?

(81,220 posts)She NEVER got rolled by her caucus the way Boehner did, routinely. She never put a bill on the floor for a vote unless she was rock-solid sure it had the votes to pass. She ran that Democratic caucus with the proverbial iron fist inside a velvet glove.
AND we would not have had the Affordable Care Act without her. President Obama wouldnt have had the Affordable Care Act without her help in the House. Sure as shit didnt have a prayer with republi-CON help!
Nancy ROCKS. AND she does realize that she needs to groom younger members to step into her shoes and other leadership positions. She does get that.

(19,537 posts)Godmother who passed at age 92.
Earned a Masters from Pitt in the 1930s, survived the depression and WW2, served the country, and became my second Mom when mine passed.
The problems I thought were earth shaking barely raised an eyebrow with her, she had seen and lived through far worse.
And like Nancy has for the party, saved me from making poor decisions based on my emotions, rather than razor sharp life strategy.
Wisdom is what it takes, and Nancy has it.

(3,077 posts)She is a strong and intelligent woman. I absolutely love her. I know some people say she is exactly what Trump wants because he can demonize her. But I disagree, she won't take shit from anyone. This is the year of the woman with all the women winning everywhere. I love the members of Congress coming forward to support her too. She is a powerful force in the resistance. I am looking forward to seeing her continue to kick ass.
