California wildfires live updates: Massive blazes grow as 2 new fires break out; dozens remain unaccounted for

By BILL HUTCHINSON and JULIA JACOBO Nov 12, 2018, 6:55 PM ET

Fueled by blustery winds and parched vegetation, two massive fires burning in California both grew overnight, leaving thousands of exhausted firefighter battling to stretch containment lines around the raging blazes that have killed at least 31 people and destroyed thousands of homes.

Adding to the turmoil were two new fires that broke out within five minutes of each other Monday morning near the massive Woolsey Fire burning in Los Angeles and Ventura counties.

Chief Mark Lorenzen of the Ventura County Fire Department said the first blaze started at 10 a.m. near the city of Thousand Oaks, quickly spread and was threatening homes. The second fire ignited about five minutes later in the Rocky Peak area near a densely populated area of Semi Valley on the Los Angeles-Ventura County line. It grew to 105 acres and prompted the closure of Highway 118 in both directions for more than an hour, but the forward progress of the fire had been stopped by 2 p.m. PT.

Fire crews rapidly raced to both fires, battling them from the ground and air with helicopters. Firefighters were able to control the blazes and stop them from spreading to nearby populated areas, officials said.

Some of it looks like Nagasaki.

A fleeting thought is that Nature is showing us what destruction can do in years for billions of dollars, it can do in a week for free.

Our house is at the bottom of the hill from the 118. It was crazy. We had about 50 fire trucks in my neighborhood. They did a stunning job!

Am I mistaken? The firefighters put it out! He and his home are safe! That is wonderful news.

I am well aware of what the fucking moron has written while disrespecting our state and the poor firefighters. I am living in a tinderbox right now. The local news is on all day waiting for news to evacuate. I open my door dreading that I will smell smoke. Our schools were closed for a week in 2003 and 2007 for the Cedar and the Witch fires. My fellow teachers/friends were evacuated and lost their homes in both fires. Ashes fell from the sky the size of potato chips from 30 miles away.
