Man shouts 'Heil Hitler, Heil Trump' during intermission of Baltimore performance of 'Fiddler on the Roof'

A man shouted a pro-Nazi and pro-Trump salute during a performance of “Fiddler on the Roof” at Baltimore’s Hippodrome Theatre on Wednesday night in an outburst that some audience members feared was the beginning of a shooting.

Audience member Rich Scherr said the outburst happened during intermission. The man, who had been seated in the balcony, began shouting “Heil Hitler, Heil Trump.” Immediately after that, “People started running,” Scherr said. “I’ll be honest, I was waiting to hear a gunshot. I thought, ‘Here we go.’ ”

The man was escorted out a few minutes later and the show continued. But Scherr, 49, said it was hard to focus on the play after that. “My heart was just racing. I didn’t even really pay attention to the second act.”

“Fiddler” tells the story of a Jewish family as it faces persecution in tsarist Russia. It’s based on “Tevye the Dairyman,” a fictional story originally written in Yiddish. The play opened Tuesday and runs through Sunday in Baltimore. A spokesman for the Hippodrome could not be reached late Wednesday.

Trump has unleashed all the hate in the country that was lurking beneath the surface. I can understand why the people were scared, thinking there was going to be another mass shooting, but I would have preferred if the audience would have stood up and shouted him down. But I probably would've thought the same thing they did...another mass shooting.

And you know...the hater's ticket for that play can't have been cheap. He actually paid money to be able to insult what he figured would be a group of Jewish people.

Fiddler on the Roof, just so haters know, is universally loved and is not attended just by Jews. My family watched this movie every time it came on tv, and I believe my mother had the album. We kids knew all the words to all the songs. One of the great Broadway musicals. We are not Jewish.

I've never understood hatred of Jews. I don't get it. I mean, why? It's not like I see their reasons, but disagree. I don't even see a reason for them to base hate on. I didn't think about the possibility of a shooting. I don't know if that means I'm also stupid or just a diehard Pollyanna. I don't agree with the violence as a punishment option. I'm a pacifist. I do think if a law exists that is applicable in this case it should be applied. The civilized members of the audience should seek like minds and band together to seek a remedy other than just showing him the door. Public shaming is never over rated.
