Spot-on political analysis from Martina Navratilova

TWEET:

TEXT:
It is amazing, really. @ChuckSchumer loses in the Senate and keeps his leadership role and @NancyPelosi makes the biggest democratic gain in the House since Watergate and they want her to quit. Go figure. A man loses and keeps his place, a woman wins and gets booted?!?

The Republicans love when we fight each other. This is not a real conflict among us. It was started by their bots. Stop it.

Schumer has been leader for two years, Pelosi for 15. Come up with something a little more difficult to poke a hole in.

The house a few times under her leadership. So winning or losing your body seems to have never been a goal post.

it is the same hillary standard that’s being applied. You are not a true democrat if you do not support Nancy Pelosi. She represents the most progressive district in the country and wins in a landslide. There is no one like her in congress. Don’t confuse her with fake progressives (aka far left). Anti Nancy BS is a bait by RW. It is the same propaganda used against Hillary, Fraken and now Avenatti. And it’s unfortunate that so many dems buy into it, instead of properly recognizing the most effective and experienced democrat in recent history. Any dem who is going to vote against Nancy for a house speaker, has a thin skin.

...on the DACA shutdown and he got played by McConnell on fastracking judges.

But it appears Pelosi is getting slammed by two groups in the House: the ones who (a) think she's too "establishment" for progressives (i.e., to draw in the Millennials and other Bernie supporters); and (b) think she's too progressive for moderates (i.e., to draw in older white males and others who voted for Trump).

That's probably why the Anti-Pelosi crowd is doing such a poor job rallying around a candidate to run against her: They have diametrically opposing notions of who that would be.

Schumer's Senate Dems were defending 6 Democratic senators in dependably Republican states. The fact that they only lost three of them (and Florida still might go our way), while picking up a win in Arizona was an honest day's pay. There's about zero criticism of Pelosi based on her sex. It's ageism turning against her, not sexism. She's been in charge for over a decade, most of that time while in the minority. I agree it's not all warranted, but calling it sexism while some of her most vocal critics are women is disingenuous.

Anyway I doubt they'll defeat her bid for speaker

I think the OP nailed it however. With her track record, which includes pulling off the votes for the ACA (for which she never gets credit), any man would be safely ensconced in his speakership. Women have to fight covert sexism, a-la "she's been so demonized". (well then defend her, there's plenty of material); or my personal favorite, "we need someone younger". I don't recall anyone saying that about McConnell, 2 years her junior, or Reid, the same age as Pelosi.

It gets even worse when you think about how successful each has been at the day-to-day mastery of their jobs. It can be and has been argued that Chuck Schumer is a feckless leader, but no one is asking to quit his job. It is universally believed that Nancy Pelosi is one of the best party leaders and Speaker of the House all time, yet she is being asked to leave her job. So, yes, when men fail at their jobs they are encouraged to keep their jobs, but when women are great at their jobs they are asked to leave their jobs.

(off topic a bit)....

About 30+ years ago I was at LaGuardia after a trip to Chicago. The buses/subways were on strike or slowdown, so cabs were at a premium going into Manhattan. They were lumping some passengers together to basically car-pool. I turned around to see who I would be paired with. HOLY SHIT, it was Martina Navratilova!!! We shared a cab into mid-town Manhattan! I don't remember much of the conversation, I was in such awe about what was going on.

People stood and watched, but no one ran up to her to bother her. Unfortunately, I didn't see any bellhops offering to carry her bag, either! I hope it is because they were too much in awe.

She was and is such a cool person. So smart and a great tennis analyst.

i'd much rather boot Schumer and keep Pelosi - based on their respective legislative skill and also their policies/politics.

There are some people who want to end the corruption in the entire system. I'm for that as well, but until we actually get there, I want experienced, progressive leaders.
