Rep.-elect Elissa Slotkin (Mich.), who defeated Rep. Mike Bishop (R-Mich.) in last weeks midterms, had promised voters during the campaign that she wants to see a new generation of leaders take the reins of both parties. In her first vote on the House floor, Slotkin said Thursday, she wont break that promise.
I have said it many, many times: I never want to be disrespectful to anyone who has served especially a woman who has broken glass ceilings. But youve got to do what your district is calling for, and in this case, for me, both sides of the aisle, just people feel that we need a new generation of leadership. And I need to hear that, Slotkin said Thursday during a policy forum in Washington hosted by Defense One.
I will not be supporting Leader Pelosi. I will not.
Slotkin did not, however, rule out the option of voting present during the Jan. 3 Speaker vote on the House floor a move that would lower the threshold needed to elect the next House leader.

(765 posts)Getting goaded into making that promise by the GOP/M$M smear machine is the first mistake these folks made (that Tim Ryan, D-Weaksauce is exploiting). They allowed the narrative to be about a person rather than policy. They should never have promised that in the first place, because they look foolish now that the vote is happening and the #fivewhiteguys chicken shits are making such a mess of it.
In the future, stick to policy.

(39,369 posts)Part of the game will always be about taking issues off the table. Any leader who has been subjected to the Republican machine for 15 years and counting will have high negatives and become an easy campaign target. Conor Lamb probably doesnt win if he backs Pelosi. After that, what were others in subsequent tight elections supposed to do, fall on their swords for her?

(19,038 posts)Many of these Dems who won got in by the skin of their teeth. And many were asked pointedly by their voters if they would support Pelosi and made campaign promises that they will not.
Slotkin will keep her word to her constituents or she'll be out of a job in 2 years. Doesn't mean she won't support Speaker Pelosi if she remains speaker, but she absolutely needs to honor her word.
A lot of these Freshmen Dems won because they promised a new direction for the party.

(19,038 posts)I want Dems to keep campaign promises. This candidate and others who promised not to support Pelosi for Speaker should keep their promises, they should also support her 100% if/when she is named speaker again.
Get on board? How about keep your word?

(19,038 posts)This Congresswoman barely won, she'll be a great asset going forward, but not if she breaks her campaign promises, her seat will be red in 2020 if she does.
Doesn't hurt the overall mission to be honest. It helps it.
She wants to debate who the next speaker is and so do I. When Pelosi or whoever else is named Speaker she will 100% support them.
