Patton Oswalt and a few others have been pointing out that every time RWers try to do comedy, they fall on their faces because RWers just aren't funny. One of the more brainwashed Trump cultists just posted this on my Facebook page. The caption on the video says, "OMG I'm dying this is the funniest shit ever. Calm down snowflakes it's comedy not hate speech." (Caption was typed verbatim to include all grammatical errors). Except for just a FEW problems. It's not even remotely funny, it basically IS hate speech, and it's about as factually accurate as anything else Trump and cultists claim (which is to say, not at all). My favorite part is when he says, "I don't lose." Do Trump supporters actually believe he's been WINNING this entire time? I say this so often I should probably have it printed on a T-shirt, but what color is the sky in their world? I honestly can't wait to see this pile of human garbage in prison.

Let's say a rich person wants a loaf of bread, there's so much room here. A rich person not knowing what a grocery store is and their wacky misadventures looking for that bread, demanding a clerk act as their servant, asking what a quarter is, thinking they need an ID to buy the bread, etc.
A poor person not being able to buy a loaf of bread? Well, other than self-deprecation, it quickly becomes sociopathy if you make fun of that.
When the right wingers set themselves as the guardians of the status quo and the powerful, they will lose any humor game.

(13,340 posts)There is a LONG scholarly line which documents humor as a way the downtrodden and oppressed resist the powerful. If you look at the history of humor, it almost always works its way back to the lowly lampooning the high.

(43,181 posts)As you said, it's just subpar substitution of anger and attempt at shock for actual comedy. And the worst sin of all is comedy that falls flat.
It reminds me of the scene in Seinfeld where Jerry (who is Jewish) is in a confessional booth with a priest complaining that his dentist Tim Whatley (played by Brian Cranston) has converted to Judaism strictly for the jokes. The exchange:
Priest: "And this offends you as a Jewish person?"
Jerry: "No, it offends me as a comedian!"
One thing I've noticed is how unfunny racist "jokes" really are. And I don't mean unfunny as in offensive. I mean unfunny in that they lack basic elements of humor. A few years back, Justin Bieber got in trouble for telling a "joke" about black people being afraid of chainsaws and I guess the gist was that chainsaws sound like the word "n****" or something to that effect. It was the hottest mess of a joke and I couldn't see how it could even be funny even if you put the offensive nature aside.
Or you have the old Polish "Polack" jokes, which are premised on the xenophobic stereotype from decades ago that Polish immigrants were supposedly stupid. And most of them just lacked any sort of comedic originality. That was lampshaded perfectly in the Coen Brothers' classic movie Raising Arizona, where Glen, who is the boss of the main character H.I. (played by Nicholas Cage) insists on telling nonsensical, unfunny Polish jokes:
The ending of the movie shows Glen's comeuppance, where Glen--angry at H.I.--is desperate to spill incriminating information on H.I., is shown pulled over by a cop for speeding and is desperately attempting to tell the officer about H.I.'s deeds. But H.I.'s narration says, "Maybe he threw in one Polack joke too many. I don't know." as the officer with the badge name Kowalski ignores him and writes the ticket.

(8,964 posts)it helps to be able to differentiate between fantasy and fiction. Many if not most right-wingers are incapable of doing this, preferring conspiracy theories and non-stop talking points to what fully functional brains would perceive. From this, humor is nearly impossible, and the typical emotional outlets are rage and resentment. Ever notice that Donald Trump has never demonstrated anything close to spontaneous laughter? It's a disturbing phenomena that many of his followers would never begin to notice, quite possibly because it's a shared characteristic.
