Is Mike Pence Loyal? Trump Is Asking, Despite His Recent Endorsement

WASHINGTON — President Trump’s post-midterm election news conference at the White House last week took a surprising turn when a reporter asked about locking down his 2020 ticket.

“Mike, will you be my running mate?” Mr. Trump asked Vice President Pence, who stood up, raised his hand, and nodded.

“Will you? Thank you. O.K., good,” the president said. “That was unexpected, but I feel very fine.”

But in private Mr. Trump is apparently not feeling so fine. In recent weeks, with his electoral prospects two years from now much on his mind, Mr. Trump has focused on the person who has most publicly tethered his fortunes to him. In one conversation after another he has asked aides and advisers a pointed question: Is Mike Pence loyal?

3. At this juncture, what use is Trump to the GOP?

They already got their executive orders deregulating, etc, immigrants thrown in jail at record numbers, big tax cut and Supreme Court Justices.

Trump helped them lose the House so nothing of substance for the GOP is going to pass before 2020.
His numbers are persistently bad. Mueller will make them worse.

The GOP are in position to mitigate party damages by hoping on board and helping impeach him - and claiming they are part of the solution as Trump lied to them too.

I guess that all depends on how many in the GOP Trump thinks he could take down with him.

Trump doesn't care about anyone but himself.
The GOP don't care about Trump - they just want to hang on to as much power as they can.

Maybe that is part of the reason Trump is getting so uptight. He senses everyone is bailing out on him now.

How many here would trust Mitch McConnell or Paul Ryan?

The above is just a theory. I have little of substance to back it up. Just an interesting set of thoughts ...

6. They have to be leery about alienating the base.

They know they may suffer some short-term losses (mitigated by a tyranny of the minority system that they've successfully gamed), but they also know that memories and attention spans are short. And that no party stays in power for very long given the constant clamoring for change. They'll continue to wage procedural war. Be on the lookout for Trump 2.0, a more savvy, well-spoken and charismatic demagogue. Contrary to what some wish to believe, the Republican Party isn't going away, unfortunately.

To me, they have progressed - getting more evil each decade.

Their base is so ignorant, they can tell them anything and they'll fall into line like a dumb lap dog.

Trump's existence in the Oval office exposes serious flaws in the system.

With Nixon, we were talking about what we needed to do for the future while many were slapping themselves on the back that the system worked and "we" got the crook out of office. Those of us outraged by his pardon and the installation of Gerald Ford knew better.

The difference this time around is that too few are talking about fixing the problem that allowed Trump in the first place as we're still largely consumed with trying to figure out if we can even get rid of him with a corrupt GOP.

...constitutionally, all the VP does is reside over the Senate. He can't be forced to support the administration, or do or say anything he doesn't want to. The President can't fire him. He can only be removed via impeachment... Hmm. We may be living in even more interesting times than we supposed...

8. The VP has changed throughout history

At one point it was the person who came in second in the electoral college. And then it evolved so that the party picked the VP at the convention.

If you look back over several elections, imagine if the person who came in second was the VP?

I'm not a big original intent person when it comes to the constitution but as I'm thinking about it, I sort of like the idea of the person who comes in second having a role. Millions of people voted for them. They should get to finish the term if the president cannot.

Anyway, of course Pence isn't loyal to 45. Why would he be?
