Retired admiral who oversaw bin Laden raid doubles down on Trump criticism

Retired Adm. William McRaven, who oversaw the U.S. operation that killed Osama bin Laden, doubled down on Sunday on his criticism of President Trump's treatment of the press after the president went after McRaven in an interview with "Fox News Sunday."

Trump dismissed McRaven as a "Hillary Clinton fan" and an "Obama-backer," and suggested the U.S. took too long to hunt down bin Laden after anchor Chris Wallace noted that the retired admiral has called the president's rhetoric toward the media "the greatest threat to democracy in his lifetime."

McRaven told CNN in a statement that he stands by his comments.

"I stand by my comment that the President's attack on the media is the greatest threat to our democracy in my lifetime," he said. "When you undermine the people's right to a free press and freedom of speech and expression, then you threaten the Constitution and all for which it stands."

McRaven, 63, noted that he did not back Hillary Clinton or any other candidate in the 2016 election, and that he worked under both President Obama and President George W. Bush.

Adm. McRaven had a distinguished career of almost four decades in the USN, and saw active combat service in multiple conflicts over that period; he is a recipient of the DSM (twice), Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, etc.

As an example of the type of leader he is, here's his commencement speech at UT:

Adm. McRaven is a man of demonstrated courage, dignity, integrity, daring, audacity, intelligence, and professionalism; he is a true patriot and and an exemplar of an officer, a leader, and a sailor.

Mr. Trump is a coward, a criminal, and a traitor.

or the comments about raking the forest like Finland (who doesn't rake their forests) to control the California fires

or avoiding military cemeteries so the dead squirrel glued to the top of his head doesn't get looking too fake in the rain ...

Things like this will cost him among his dead head supporters - not wholesale - just nibbling away support.

By the time 2020 rolls around, if he hasn't been impeached, he's not going to run because even he will see how pathetically low he is in the polls.

The GOP will cut their losses as he's already served his purpose.
