He has caused hatred to unhide. African-Americans and Asians had him pegged from the get go, Hispanics finally seem to be getting a better clue. The problem is White people, but, White people that are decent now know what their neighbor, relative, boss, coworker is like because Trump gave the ones that are ugly license to come out with their hatred. The question is what will those decent White people do, will they continue to vote with the racists and haters, or will they say, enough!!!

His approval rating has been steadier than that of any of his predecessors. It's stunning, actually, to see how relatively straight his line is compared to others: https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/trump-approval-ratings/

Low, yes, but incredibly steady.

That steady group never sees what we do because they're reading conservative newspapers, on conservative news sites or watching conservative news channels.

I think him snubbing the vets in France and Arlington, going after McRaven, etc eventually get through to some of these people.

Reality will probably set in with the GOP when they evaluate his chances of winning in 2020. Then they can vote to impeach him "hey, he lied to us too!. We're part of the solution to get rid of him". ... At that point, they don't have much more to lose and everything to gain.

At some point we'll see Trump 2.0, a demagogue who is more politically savvy, intelligent and charismatic. We better be prepared.

Even in the short-term, our tyranny of the minority system helps them mitigate the damage (for instance, taking back the Senate in 2020 will be a tall order--hopefully turnout for Dems will be record-breaking and we can get to at least a 50-50 split). And then there's gerrymandering and voter suppression.

The GOP as we presently know it is dying. The only question now is when.

And Trump, as awful as he is, still has an approval rating of around 40%.

I don't think the Republican Party is going anywhere anytime soon. There are a lot of states without metro areas substantial enough for us to make them competitive.

Texas demographics (as are a number of states) are shifting.

When those Latinos watching FOX news in Texas find out what is really going on and as the demographics for Latinos increases over whites, Texas stops becoming a reliably red state without major changes in policy. Trump's policies are turning a generation of Latinos against the Republicans. Without Texas electoral votes along with California and New York blue, it becomes almost impossible for a Republican to be president and get any legislation past the president.

Republicans know this. They're clinging to power for their ignorant or racist white constituents as long as they can. But in the next 10 to 20 years, things are going to look a lot different. Even with Citizens United, gerrymandering, voter suppression, etc, the present Republican policies cannot survive and won't.

Although the Latino population is currently almost 50%, voting eligible is only 20% of the population.

New eligible voters are from children who turn 18.

It is difficult to attain citizenship via immigration.

He will lose a lot of his base only if they see that he is stark raving insane and fall down to chew the carpet while barking like a dog. BUT, those are the same people who voted overwhelmingly for a dead pimp almost two weeks after he died, so I would not put anything past them.

If he suddenly came out in favor of Black Lives Matter, feminism, gay rights and so on, he'd lose his base.

But barking like a dog, swearing allegiance to Mother Russia and then falling down and chewing on the carpet before sucking his thumb in the fetal position wouldn't do the trick. Hell, he could murder someone in broad daylight on 5th Avenue and not lose a supporter.

There ares still scads of people who aren't really paying that much attention that see their job is not under threat of being eliminated, the markets haven't tanked (although mostly flat), and they haven't been personally affected in a negative way.

So, they have always been Rs and don't see any problem. That does not, however, make them cultists. Just a bit oblivious.

The one glaring number is the "strongly disapprove" number which is VERY high, and consistently so.

It won't take a lot of economic issues, or a GOP plan going sideways to get some of that "sure, i'll approve, why not" crowd to shift some.

Now, 25% are intractable, and even armageddon wouldn't change their mind.

Yes, I agree that his flame is dimming, but his very presence is a continuing subversion of democracy. He has broken so many laws, norms and systems that pundits have lost count, and yet he remains the freest person in America, spreading his horrible “ideas” over social media, making eye-poppingly false claims, and telling lies so obviously that a 5-year-old could detect it.

The most sobering thought is this: in other countries where democracy gave way to autocracy, a clean return to democracy is difficult; the political landscape changed in such a way that a Herculean effort was required to shore up the damage.

Until he is completely out of the White House, Trump is pure poison.
