From "Roll Call":
Some of the newly elected Democratic House members who said on the campaign trail they would not support Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi for speaker have already shown signs of cracking as Pelosi ramps up the pressure for them not to divide the party before it even takes control of the chamber in January.
Rep.-elect Mikie Sherrill, a New Jersey Democrat who said during her campaign that the party needs new leadership, and it starts at the top, declined to affirm that statement after meeting with Pelosi on Friday.
Im sorry, I got to go, Sherrill told reporters waiting outside the minority leaders office. She directed reporters to her press aide.
...
Rep.-elect Andy Kim, another New Jersey Democrat, defeated Rep. Tom MacArthur on a platform that included ushering in a new generation of leaders in both parties.
But he dodged a Philadelphia Inquirer reporters question about his previous opposition to Pelosi and whether anything had changed.
Right now Im not making any commitments, Kim said. I certainly wanted a new generation of leadership, and thats certainly still something I want.
...
Haley Stevens, an incoming freshman member from Michigan, had also signaled during the campaign she would not vote for Pelosi for speaker on the House floor.
But she kept her options on the table Friday before lawmakers and elected lawmakers, whove been at new member orientation this week, head home for Thanksgiving.
I havent said no, Stevens said of supporting Pelosi, CNN reported.

(2,064 posts)They know that Pelosi will win eventually because nobody in the Democratic caucus wants a repugnant goon for Speaker.

(823 posts)I would be willing to bet that if Pelosi has the votes needed to win the speakership without needing those who ran on not supporting her she would allow them to vote for someone else. That's just good politics. Let them keep a campaign promise that helps them in two years but causes no damage now. During the voting for the ACA she had the votes to get the bill through and allowed some dems to vote no, like my ex-rep Chet Edwards. Chet did not lose on this, he lost to a rethug gerrymander that totally screwed his democratic constituents, but he and the democratic leadership had hoped this vote would help...the gerrymander was way too successful for that though.

(53,771 posts)who will become chairperson of those committees once the next Congress begins in Jan.
Cummings, Schiff, Lowey, Nadler and Walz are just a few of the sitting Dems poised to take over their committees and begin investigations, hearings and the issuing of subpoenas on all the wrongdoings of the trump admin.
BTW, there are 20 House committees so the notion that no potential leaders have been groomed is just not accurate.

(50,895 posts)One in the caucus and then the vote on the floor. They can vote for someone else during the caucus if anyone even runs. After the caucus they all need to band together. A couple voting against her might be okay. But it would not be good to vote for a Republican.

(56,828 posts)but, while Steny Hoyer seems like a swell guy and has been in the House for nigh on 40 years now, I think having him step aside for now might be best.
My reason is purely numbers
1) Pelosi is the leader in a year when we elected a huge number of women. Canning her in that year just looks bad, even if replaced by another woman.
2) #3 in the House is James Clyburn, and dumping an African American House member when the two above him are white doesn't look good.
3) Hoyer is older than Pelosi and women typically live several years longer than men, so if anybody has reached an age where they should step aside, it's Hoyer.
Have somebody younger but still experienced (Adam Schiff? Ted Lieu?) step into Hoyer's role

(7,113 posts)He's not feasible as the next in line after Nancy retires, since he's older than her (79 to her 78).
Steny was just re-elected with about 80 percent of the vote, so he can bear a little loss in support by a few voters who only vote for him because of his leadership position. (Can't imagine anyone does that anyway.)
He may be a skilled Whip behind the scenes, but he's not a great party spokesperson. On TV appearances and public speeches, he's just not a very inspiring speaker.
It would actually benefit our district (MD-5) if Steny were just a garden-variety U.S. Representative rather than a leadership wheeler-dealer. Maybe he could spend more time addressing local needs rather than spending all his time traveling for DCCC and fundraising and recruiting candidates, etc.

(19,954 posts)your exact point ie Pelosi is great but the leadership team needs to be changed.
Me.
(35,454 posts)2 of the more conservative members who are part of Krystal Ball's People House Project where the emphasis is basically on money, not diversity or other issues people care about like the one that won so many seats...ACA. Ball put that so-called project together and so far the only one who has benefitted is she and she has made a nice little bundle. Maybe Ryan and Moulton shouldn't be making decisions for anyone.
