ready to work with EVERYONE.
Illinois is reliably blue, despite some deplorably red areas, like my district. But Illinois did help. We flipped two districts. My son was happy to see Roskam lose in the 6th. He worked to help get rid of the guy.
His district, the 14th made him even happier, and me too! I am bewildered by DU's lack of response to Lauren Underwood's historic win in the 14th. She is 32, the youngest black woman ever elected to Congress. She beat Randy Hultgren in an historically red area.
Underwood told campaign workers, "I'm ready to get to work. My team is thinking of ways that we can be back on the road in every community to figure out how to pull together this agenda so that when he gets sworn in on Jan. 3, we are ready to be that voice. This is not some kind of one-sided mission. This is all of us together."

I am proud that Illinois is sending this young woman to Congress. She is willing to listen, learn and work with her coalition.

(58,785 posts)sworn in: reporting what's happening to her new constituents. Thanks for pointing her out. I read a bit about all of them when elected, but...distractions. Looks like IL-14 did a good job when it dumped that Trumpist Republican and elected her..

Those are Reps.-elect Chrissy Houlahan of Pennsylvania, Abigail Spanberger of Virginia, Deb Haaland of New Mexico, Lauren Underwood of Illinois and Donna Shalala of Florida. "Underwood, 32, talked about the benefits of having more young people serving in Congress. And so now we have not just one vote at the table. We have a caucus. A true millennial caucus, said Underwood, the youngest African-American member of Congress ever elected."
Btw, anyone know who this 116th freshman class chose for their class president and other office(s), like outreach to leadership and whatever else there is? I only found it for a previous class.

(13,186 posts)But just came up short.
This district soaked up a LOT of TV and radio money to keep it red and we just came up short
murielm99
(30,733 posts)But it is so red here that all we can do is make them work hard and spend their money to keep their seats. We will keep chipping away.

These fighting new Dems in Congress are there because of the willingness to go to battle against all odds.
-Because they believe in the platform of Democratic Party.
Thev'e proven their committment to their constituents & their country.

I am sure Cheri will take Ms. Underwood under her wing. But I'm going to write Cheri a letter and enclose a newspaper clipping, just in case. Letters often get more attention. And this is my son's district.
LOVE Cheri! We can't vote for her here in Eastern IA. However, we spend a lot of time in the QC's and follow her closely. She kicked her opponent's ashtabula

(30,733 posts)Bill Fawell. His own party disowned him for his nutty conspiracy theories. He has run in the past as a Libertarian.
Odd thing about him: He is a member of the prominent Republican Fawell family. They got their start in West Chicago, where I grew up. My dad fought with them from the time Beverly Fawell was a local office holder. My dad said she was always a crook. The son, Scott Fawell, was turned by Patrick Fitzgerald of Fitzmas fame, and he sent Ryan to jail. Fitzgerald threatened Scottie's fiance with prison, so Scott talked.
Prominent families figure heavily in Illinois politics, on both sides of the aisle. It may not always be so, and I am not saying it is all bad. Some talented people end up being raised to be public servants and politicians. And I don't think all the Fawells are corrupt.

If it were not for Chicago, IL would be a Red State Hellhole.
That's all.

(18,470 posts)Of course there are some Democrats too who are almost just as corrupt as their GOP colleagues.
But it seems to me that the Republicans in Illinois are as corrupt as hell.

(30,733 posts)There are multiple threads about other female winners, with hundreds of replies, and you complain about a handful of threads for Underwood? I see that several people here have heard nothing about her.
I did see one thread in the Illinois forum. But I think Underwood's historic victory has been largely overlooked here, and in the MSM.
Don't accuse me of not checking. This is an important win that deserves MORE attention. Maybe I will post more threads about her activities and comments, as time goes by.

If I lived 2 streets to the south, I would be in her district. Here in IL 6, we did get rid of Roskam, who prides himself on being one of the architects of the tax cut for the 1%ers.

(6,974 posts)Last week or the week before last.
She understands the urgency of trying to get and keep all Americans good affordable health care since she's a nurse practitioner. She's intelligent and heartfelt and will be working in everyone's behalf to have good and affordable health care and to also make sure that they're covered even if they suffer from a pre-existing condition. She said that she also suffers from a pre-existing condition so she'll be fighting not just for her own states constituents, but for all of us nation-wide who also deserve good affordable health care and who also deserve to be covered even if we suffer from a pre-existing condition.
Lauren's a REAL winner. God be with this young lady

(4,352 posts)It was a stunning victory on election night, wasn't it? I too am a bit bewildered by the lack of response to this win. I used to live in that district before it became Hastert's district. Remember him? Yeah Lauren Underwood won in the former district of the longest serving republican Speaker of the House.
