(90,642 posts)This is going to date me a lot, but when I still lived in Hawai'i I was hoping for Senator Hiram Fong to retire and Congresswoman Patsy Takemoto Mink to run for Senator and join Senator Inouye in Washington. She was a liberal firecracker, and her husband had a "portable" job as a marine scientist so he was fine in D.C. But their daughter got sick (cancer iirc) so Patsy didn't run for Senate.
I'm so glad Mazie is there now.
Me ke aloha, Mazie.
I was there as well, I do remember Senator Fong and Congresswoman Mink - may both RIP.
I recall the primary between Mink and Matsunaga for Fong's seat. I actually held up signs and waved for Mink. Had no clue what I was doing as I was in grade school - I went with a friend who's family was political. But it was fun.
For the longest time, I thought Fong was a Democrat. It's only much later I figured out he was a Republican and actually ran for president - but today he would be considered a far leftist in that party. They would call him a RINO.
I also remember Pat Saiki and was thrilled when she won as she was a Asian woman - and that was a rarity in Congress. Like I said, I had no clue what she stood for back then. But was thrilled when she lost her seat - I had finally figured out her platform.
With you on the love for Hirano!! Makes me proud to be a son of Hawaii.

(297,137 posts)Sen. Mazie Hirono spoke to members of the media on Capitol Hill in Washington, Sept. 18. Three Senate Democrats filed a lawsuit today arguing that Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitakers appointment is unconstitutional and asking a federal judge to remove him.

(6,547 posts)She shone like a 100 watt bulb in a dark room during that hearing. She is wonderful and is coming into her own. Go, Mazie! Love her!

(54,341 posts)She told me that after Hawai'i itself, the state from which the most contributions to her 2012 campaign came was Texas!
