Happily, an arrest has been made in the defacement of the African Burial Ground National Monument..

..in Lower Manhattan. The suspect had been caught on several video cameras as he left the location, which helped to i.d. him.

Ivan Nieves was apprehended after he allegedly used a black marker to write “kill ______s” and suggested African-Americans should be killed on a plaque at the site where 419 Africans are buried. Authorities say the 57-year-old was seen on area security camera footage.

According to the DOJ, who will be prosecuting the case because it took place on federal property, he is currently "charged with one count of vandalism and one count of disorderly conduct. Each charge carries a maximum penalty of six months in prison."

And now they're looking for this guy, thought to be in his 40's, for placing swastika stickers on the subway on Nov. 11th. In the middle of the day, no less.

so I looked it up and found some interesting information. I am planning a visit to NYC this spring and will try to see the African Burial Ground.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_Burial_Ground_National_Monument

..."The discovery highlighted the forgotten history of enslaved Africans in colonial and federal New York City, who were integral to its development. By the American Revolutionary War, they constituted nearly a quarter of the population in the city. New York had the second-largest number of enslaved Africans in the nation after Charleston, South Carolina.

.....

Slavery in the New York City area was introduced by the Dutch West India Company in New Netherland in about 1626 with the arrival of Paul D'Angola, Simon Congo, Lewis Guinea, Jan Guinea, Ascento Angola, and six other men. Their names denote their place of origin: Angola, the Congo, and Guinea. Two years after their arrival three female Angolan slaves arrived. These two groups heralded the beginning of slavery in what would become New York City, and which would continue for two hundred years.[15] The first slave auction in the city took place in 1655 at Pearl Street and Wall Street - then on the East River. Although the Dutch imported Africans as slaves, it was possible for some to gain freedom or "half-freedom" during the time of Dutch rule. In 1643, Paul D'Angola and his companions petitioned the Dutch West India Company for their freedom. Their request was granted, resulting in their acquisition of land on which to build their own houses and farm. By the mid-17th century, farms of free blacks covered 130 acres where Washington Square Park later appeared.[16] Even slaves in full bondage were granted certain rights and afforded protections such as the prohibition against arbitrary physical punishment – for example, whipping.
Slave being burned at the stake in N.Y.C. after the 1741 slave revolt. Thirteen slaves were burned.[17]

After the English took over New Amsterdam in 1664, they changed the name to New York (after the Duke of York) and changed the rules governing slavery in the colony. Some 40 percent of the small population was in bondage.[18] The new slavery rules were more harsh and restrictive than those of the Dutch, and rescinded many of the former rights and protections of slaves, such as the prohibition against arbitrary physical punishment. In 1697 Trinity Church gained control of the burial grounds in the city and passed an ordinance excluding blacks from the right to be buried in churchyards. When Trinity took control of the municipal burial ground, now its northern graveyard, it barred Africans from interment within the city limits.[18] Through much of the 18th century, the African burying ground was beyond the northern boundary of the city, which was just beyond what is today Chambers Street.

As the city population increased, so did the number of residents who held slaves. "In 1703, 42 percent of New York's households had slaves, much more than Philadelphia and Boston combined."[19] Most slaveholding households had only a few slaves, used primarily for domestic work. By the 1740s, 20 percent of the population of New York were slaves,[20] totaling about 2,500 people.[16] Slaves also worked as skilled artisans and craftsmen associated with shipping, construction, and other trades, as well as laborers. "On the eve of the American Revolution, New York City had the largest number of enslaved Africans of any English colonial settlement except Charleston, South Carolina, and it had the highest proportion of slaves to Europeans of any northern settlement."[18] Africans had become essential to the development of New York. 6. The immediate history leading up to the creation of this monument

was rife with rancor. It was a bitter battle - notably because of the value of the land in that part of NYC, which was federally-owned, and where there were plans to construct a new (expansion) federal building. I.e., the federal government (this was under Poppy) was not planning to give up that site. The drama played out in the media in NYC, with activists demanding that the site be preserved. Fortunately they prevailed!

More info on the National Monument - https://www.gsa.gov/about-us/regions/welcome-to-the-northeast-caribbean-region-2/about-region-2/the-african-burial-ground

https://www.nps.gov/afbg/index.htm

This was not unlike what happened here in Philly not long ago with preserving the site of the President's Mansion across from Independence Hall (pre-White House) where 9 slaves had served George Washington and where the passageways to their basement living quarters had been discovered -

Again, another battle against the federal government (this was under Shrub) on preserving a part of American history - slavery - that continued to be marginalized, and the activists eventually won.

spend more than a weekend there. One could spend a whole month there easily, just breathing in the history of the city. Amazing and so nice that NYC residents have preserved this history so well. Thanks to the NYC residents who persisted in getting these historic landmarks ID'ed and preserved. A job well done.

Thanks so much, and have a nice thanksgiving!

Notice how his actions aren't unto themselves violent. And yet he is advocating a truly violent and horrible act.

NO Right Wing White Nationalist is ever peaceful when their very ideology calls for violence to others. Letting them "peacefully" have rallies and protests then getting upset because liberals fight back is pretending their goals are NOT about the death and the abuse of others.

Nazis are the Scum of the earth. We beat them back once in WWII we'll beat them back again.
