People don't like to adopt black dogs, meet Mika a hurricane survivor

Last edited Wed Nov 21, 2018, 01:26 PM - Edit history (1)

It was time to replace Luka. We had him for 16 years.

We renamed her Mika.

We adopted her from a no kill shelter: http://www.hua.org/

Homeward Bound
Born:02-01-2018 Small 10 lbs Female
HOMEWARD BOUND - ADOPTED - now living happily in Bellevue, NE!

Foxie was in an overcrowded shelter in San Angelo, TX. Many dogs are still homeless in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, and HUA continues to help with the sad overflow. Foxie is still just a teensy baby dog and full of energy and fun. She loves loves loves the company of the other small dogs and will happily play the day away if given the chance. Foxie is sweet and lovable with people, preferring a cozy lap in which to nap when she tires herself out with her many toys and little friends. This precious puppy has never had a home. She will be overcome with glee once she becomes a bonafide member of the family.

We thought a few months ago that it was time to say goodbye because of a bad weekend. See above link. He perked up that Monday morning, so he got a reprieve from my post above.

We knew last Sunday night would be his last night with us. On Monday the 12th I went in with him for his last trip to the vet. I held him in my arms as the drugs flowed into him. We had him cremated and have his ashes. I know he is waiting for us at Rainbow Bridge.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Rainbow Bridge is the theme of several works of poetry written in the 1980s and 1990s that speak of an other-worldly place where pets go upon death, eventually to be reunited with their owners. One is a prose poem whose original creator is uncertain. The other is a six-stanza poem of rhyming pentameter couplets, created by a couple to help ease the pain of friends who lost pets. Each has gained popularity around the world among animal lovers who have lost a pet. The belief has many antecedents, including similarities to the Bifröst bridge of Norse mythology.[1]

My two last pups were cremated and are in urns with pictures of the Rainbow Bridge on them. Everytime I read that poem I cry.

Personally I love black animals.

Black Dog Syndrome
This article first appeared on the Petfinder blog.

While working at the Washington Humane Society (WHS) in Washington, DC, I was thrilled when I found out that King, a large and handsome black Labrador mix was finally adopted after spending many months at WHS. King had been at the shelter for so long, everyone knew and loved him.

King is a black adoptable dog at Washington Humane Society.

King, like so many other black dogs in shelters, spent more time waiting for his new home than his lighter-colored kennelmates. In the sheltering world this is known as Black Dog Syndrome (BDS). When I left WHS to pursue graduate work in anthropology at The George Washington University I conducted research into BDS.

BDS is observed by shelters and rescue groups throughout America and affects black dogs, as well as cats. It is possible that there may simply be more black pets in the shelter and rescue population. However reports from across the country seem to illustrate the problem, and multiple national organizations have long recognized BDS as an issue that adversely affects the adoption rates of black pets.

I recently had to let mine go, after having had her around for 17 years. Her successor will probably be a black one, as well.

Mika is adorable! Hard to believe she wound up in a shelter.

Chihuahuas have great attitude! Fearless they are!

She looks Egyptian. Reminds me of Anibus with her extra long legs.

Much better to save your tiny fur friend more suffering, no doubt about that.

What a sweetie Mika is, all ready for a forever home with her friends, guardians, her whole world.

Very best wishes to you all, O.S.

I have no idea why black dogs wouldn’t be popular. People are very strange sometimes.

when we lived in Lincoln, NE. Tanya looked like a black Golden Retriever. She was a wonderful dog. Moved with us to Chapel Hill in 2000. Lived to be 14. Our black tabby cat, Mouse, thought Tanya was his mother. He loved to curl up next to her and when he was a kitten tried to nurse from her. She thought that was ok!

Congrats on your new puppy!

I'm a cat person and I never go to the shelter with a particular color in mind, it's the personality that counts. And the "vibe."
