Chief Justice Defends Judicial Independence After Trump Attacks 'Obama Judge'

WASHINGTON — In a direct rebuke to President Trump, Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. defended the independence and integrity of the federal judiciary on Wednesday, issuing a statement responding to Mr. Trump’s criticism of a judge who had ruled against the administration’s asylum policy.

The chief justice seemed particularly offended by Mr. Trump’s assertion that Judge Jon S. Tigar, of the United States District Court in San Francisco, was “an Obama judge.”

Chief Justice Roberts said that was a profound misunderstanding of the judicial role.

“We do not have Obama judges or Trump judges, Bush judges or Clinton judges,” he said in a statement. “What we have is an extraordinary group of dedicated judges doing their level best to do equal right to those appearing before them. That independent judiciary is something we should all be thankful for.”

Chief Justice Roberts issued his statement in response to a request for comment from The Associated Press about Mr. Trump’s remarks on Tuesday concerning the asylum ruling, which ordered the administration to resume accepting asylum claims from migrants no matter where or how they entered the United States.

Not anymore we don't. One Brett Kavanaugh, who clearly is completely indifferent to women (51% of the US population) and who clearly is biased against Democrats (HE. SAID. SO.) is on that court. Henceforth, that court has NO propensity for justice or fairness and that's why.

Even before THAT, a seat was STOLEN on that court - from the American people - by political operatives of the GOP. That seat remained VACANT for almost a YEAR until there was a GOP person in place to nominate someone. Before that, the Dem nominee went ignored for MONTHS.

Our ENTIRE. JUSTICE. SYSTEM. has been DESTROYED by Republicans and their operatives. Even above the goddamned Federalist Society, and above the obviously self-entitled partisan scumbag that is Brett Kavanaug, the GOP and most of all @senatemajldr is at fault for this.

Because of their POLITICAL machinations, which should NOT play any role in a justice system, the US justice system is destroyed. THIS...is at @senatemajldr Mitch McConnell's feet. Lock, stock, and barrel. ALL of it. May he rot in the hottest place in HELL for what he's done.

With all due respect to Justice Roberts, this is where we are. He may be in denial about it and I don't blame him. The rest of us decent, sane people who believe in a working justice system, are in mourning. He'll get there too eventually. It will be even more difficult for him.
