OMG. If this woman wins, there is no hope for Mississippi.

I mean, Jesus Christ, Mississippi. It doesn’t have to be this way.

What this shows is that Mississippi is still largely hopeless, but the national Democratic party has at last noticed that there's a state there, and they have run a credible, qualified candidate in Mike Espy. Will Espy pull off a Doug Jones upset? No idea. But I am persuaded that presented with such a stark choice a sufficient number of times, even Mississippi might get it right for a change.

You have got to OWN the State Legislation first, Governors, Attorney Generals, Judges, etc. Then you get to redraw districts FAIRLY, you can stop all of these shenanigans before they even get to a national level.

I do believe in today's day and age, everyone has pinpointed razor focused on what's going on in Washington. Why? Well, for one, its what our media overlords are telling us to pay attention to. Most people dont even reailze what or even who their Attorney General is, let alone what they do.

AFTER EDIT: Im also not saying target those at a national level that can be, but its more important to get those local seats first.

For underneath her borders, the devil draws no lines
If you drag her muddy river, nameless bodies you will find
The fat trees of the forest have hid a thousand crimes
And the calendar is lyin' when it reads the present time
Here's to the land you've torn out the heart of
Mississippi, find yourself another country to be part of

And here's to the people of Mississippi
Who say the folks up north, they just don't understand
And they tremble in their shadows at the thunder of the Klan
The sweating of their souls can't wash the blood from off their hands
They smile and shrug their shoulders at the murder of a man
Oh, here's to the land you've torn out the heart of
Mississippi, find yourself another country to be part of

And here's to the schools of Mississippi
Where they're teaching all the children that they don't have to care
All the rudiments of hatred are present everywhere
And every single classroom is a factory of despair
There's nobody learning such a foreign word as "fair"
Oh, here's to the land you've torn out the heart of
Mississippi, find yourself another country to be part of

And here's to the cops of Mississippi
They're chewing their tobacco as they lock the prison door
Their bellies bounce inside them when they knock you to the floor
No they don't like taking prisoners in their private little war
Behind their broken badges there are murderers and more
Oh, here's to the land you've torn out the heart of
Mississippi, find yourself another country to be part of

It's it's own thread for sure, but I've long wondered how we can 'blue-ify' red America...maybe we need a kind of liberal farm initive, where we find a way for true-blue liberals to move out of their cities and burbs, into the flyover country, and let them run organic farms and stuff (all while taking their liberalism and culture WITH THEM).

it's crazy, but just because it's Nowheresville , NW, does not mean it shouldn't have a theatre department, right lol?

There are plenty of conservative black people in Mississippi. There are also plenty of evangelical black churches which are just as bigoted toward certain people as their white counterparts are. Mississippi is complex, at least as much as anywhere else in the U.S. It isn't just mean, ignorant white people and poor, suffering black people down here.

because the vast majority of black evangelical church members don't vote against their own economic self interest in favor of social wedge issues. That's true of Mississippi and every other state in the nation.

they are cheering her racism. Hell folks, the ONLY reason Alabama (my state) doesn't have Roy Moore as our Senator is that he had sex with minors and stalked them in malls. We have very low bars down here. And yes, I'm too farking old to move so don't offer that option.

I'm voting for Espy, but I know I'm wasting my time. If he wins it will be a fluke. I come to DU to keep up with national news, but I see very little local news. There are a lot of nice people here who just don't think it's worth it to get all worked up over the stupid political situation here. We put our energies into gardening or reading or maybe some sort of art work. That's how the good people down here stay sane.

talking about politics down here is a sure fire way to lose friends and start fights. So, I just do my best to avoid those people with whom I disagree. When I voted for Jones, I was hopeful that Moore was SOOOOOOOOO disgusting that many repugs would just stay home. It's a shame the vote was so close.
Happy Thanksgiving!!
