Big Business Is Stealing From Their Own Workers. Will Democrats Stop Them?
It's a very short piece and well worth the read. Certainly something to consider going forward in the new year:
From The Daily Beast's Michael Tomasky.
Big Business Is Stealing From Their Own Workers. Will Democrats Stop Them?
The working class isnt just coal miners, its retail and service workers, and theyre getting cheated by their bosses. The road to beating Trump in 2020 goes through them.
Heres a little shopping season question for you. That sales associate at Nordstrom, the nicely decked out woman who sells those $400 purses and $600 blazers: How much money does she probably make, roughly, per year?
a. $20,000
b. $30,000
c. $50,000
d. $70,000
Well, its Nordstrom, its a class outfit, a cut or maybe even two above Macys
She must make decent coin, right?
Not likely. According to indeed.com, your average apparel associate, cashier, or cashier/sales clerk at the chain makes something around $11 an hour. Thats $385 a week, or right around $20,000 a yearbefore taxes. Of course, with experience, people make more, but even the highest salaries aren't great. And that $20,000 is virtually a poverty wage. And thats assuming theyre letting them work a full 35-hour week, which of course a lot of places dont because it means they have to pay benefits (I dont know Nordstroms particular practices in this regard, but weve all read plenty of stories about how common enforced part-timing is in the retail world).
