Chef José Andrés, Trump Critic and Humanitarian, Nominated for Nobel Peace Prize

José Andrés, the Michelin-starred Spanish-American chef and outspoken Trump critic, has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for 2019.
The Spanish-born chef, who owns several award-winning restaurants across the United States, has immersed himself in humanitarian work over the last few years, winning praise from all quarters for his dedication to feeding the disenfranchised as well as victims of natural disasters.
Following the 2010 Haiti earthquake, Andrés started World Central Kitchen (WCK), an organization which provides healthy food to families and individuals touched by disasters. After Hurricane Maria devastated the US territory of Puerto Rico, Andrés and WCK emerged as leaders in relief efforts to alleviate the suffering of the beleaguered island and its people, even as the Trump administration came under widespread criticism for its tepid response to the crisis. Within the first month of rescue efforts, Andrés and WCK had provided more than two million meals to the islanders, and ended up feeding more people than the Red Cross and Salvation Army combined, despite no government support and frequent bureaucratic obstacles.
Apart from his culinary talent and humanitarian work, Andrés is also famous for having styled the many many many dishes which constitute such a huge part of the visual appeal of Hannibal, Bryan Fullers gorgeous but blood-soaked reimagining of the worlds favourite fictional cannibal, Dr. Hannibal Lecter. Given that a majority of Hannibals culinary efforts include human um meat and offal, its Andrés plating that renders each dish an exquisite, sensorial masterpiece.
Pop culture aside, Andrés has become an increasingly vocal critic of the current US administrations policies, with the chef frequently calling out Donald Trump over his divisive rhetoric and questionable actions. Most famously, Andrés withdrew from a contract with the Trump Organization for opening a restaurant in Trump International Hotel in Washington DC, after POTUS made racist comments about Mexicans while campaigning for office.
Representative John Delaney, a Democratic Congressman from Maryland, confirmed to The Washington Post on Monday that he had nominated Andrés for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize.

(1,054 posts)Officially, Nobel nominees are not revealed for 50 years. Anybody can say they nominated someone, but we don't know they actually became an official nominee by the Nobel folks.
