As Trump renews border wall demands, government shutdown looms
Richard Cowan
4 MIN READ
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trumps renewed demand for U.S. taxpayer funding of his proposed U.S.-Mexico border wall was threatening again on Tuesday to bring on a budget standoff and a partial government shutdown, leaving Congress just 11 days to act.
With time running short, Trump and Republican leaders of the U.S. House of Representatives huddled at the White House.
Representative Steve Scalise, who attended the meeting, later told Fox News: Its all about border security and $5 billion is the number for the wall.
That figure is significantly higher than even Republicans in the Senate have sought and Democrats have rejected.
An aide to House Speaker Paul Ryan would not comment on the $5 billion figure, only saying there was discussion of the need for responsible funding for border security.

(26,035 posts)My wife works at Treasury. In a shutdown, you get furloughed unless your position is designated as essential, in which you have to come in and work anyway. Theoretically, once the shutdown is over, you should get paid for all the days you worked, but nowhere is that guaranteed, and Congress and the administration could just thank you for your unpaid labor during the shutdown and hang you out to dry.

(16,178 posts)That is set into federal law as part of the GS system or authorized alternative pay systems.
I believe there were a few hundred mostly technical workers at the FAA whose funding got missed on an extension bill about 6 years ago and were furloughed for weeks. Congress never authorized them back pay.

Congressional Republicans who push for the Tax Payer funded wall will see serious back lash in 2020. They can bet the farm on that.
Partial Government shutdown? Is that like a Semi-Tractor trailer?
