Number of unauthorized immigrants in US fell in 2016 to lowest level in a decade: Pew

The number of unauthorized immigrants living in the U.S. reached its lowest level in more than a decade in 2016, according to a new analysis from the Pew Research Center.

Pew notes that there were 10.7 million people in the U.S. who were unauthorized immigrants in 2016, according to estimates it produced based on government data.

That is about 1.5 million fewer than the peak of about 12.2 million in 2007 and the lowest number of undocumented immigrants living in the U.S. since 2004.

Pew noted that the reason for the decline is largely tied to a drop in the number of individuals from Mexico who were living in the U.S. without authorization.
