General Discussion

Whoever tries to primary him will get my vote. If he is still here the Republicans that will stand against him will need all the help they can get. I'm going to trust the dem ticket to work itself out.

(12,265 posts)I live in Oklahoma, I have thought more than once, I should register as a Republican so I can actually cast a vote that matters in the primary and the general, but I just can't do it. It is dishonest.

(2,857 posts)I've voted against the worst choice before then voted for my choice in the General. This time I feel like we have to fight at every opportunity.
The rest of you do as you feel is best.

(34,106 posts)If it is available to do that then there is nothing dishonest about it. If either party did not want that it would not be open. I did that once when there was a particularly heinous state legislator that needed to be gone. Lots and lots of Democrats did and it worked. You can change your party status at the primaries if you want here. I get what you are saying but I figure they all know that sometimes jockying with the parties is needed. I would prefer not to do it but in the case of Trump I might be convinced.

(12,265 posts)I am. I don't agree with the faction who wants change no matter what the consequences.

(34,106 posts)What? This has nothing to do with Bernie. I am not sure what you mean and I don't want what I think you might mean to be true so let's just leave it there so this thread can move on with the correct discussion ok?

(58,785 posts)self destructive consequences is not the only motivation or result of registering and voting for candidates in the "other" party.
Our deep south district is measured as among the reddest in the entire nation. Democrats never win here, and Republicans will take office. In this era we have literally never seen one I would want to give government power to, but we usually find candidates who seem at least somewhat better choices than the right-wing extremists they're running against. Some could probably be decent legislators in an environment that allowed it, not that we have that.
We see voting for Republicans we believe would do less harm as both a duty and a moral position and as a valid way to have our say in who will be given power.

to get even worse - now that his economy is also starting to suck along with every other shitty thing about him - that he's a shoe-in to lose in 2020. Im not sure why we'd want to fight against a candidate with less baggage in the GE.

(2,857 posts)I'm surrounded by the type that elected her and have zero faith in their ability to see the light or vote in their own best interests. Just because they should have better sense doesn't mean they will. Simply put, his supporters are rabid lunatics.
I know you are right though.

(10,721 posts)And all 3 states were super close. I expect them to be blue again in 2020. We already made progress in those states this month.
Other states we can put in play: FL, NC, AZ, GA, OH.
The days of a candidate winning 400 electoral votes are long gone, but Obama's 365 from 2008 is within reach.

(6,853 posts)It is absolutely NOT improper to vote in the other partys primary to try to get rid of Hitler. Youre saying you can live with any Dem, but you need to use the power of your vote for the most good it will do. Since we have a binary system, winner take all, you may be right to vote that way. Not that you need my approval, but I definitely appreciate your efforts to maximize the power of your vote.

(56,828 posts)that changed his voter registration to Democrat from Republican just to vote against Hillary Clinton in the primaries. In Connecticut, you need to do this several months in advance if you change parties to prevent too many shenanigans like that.

(32,634 posts)... and I know for a fact that the GOP has been doing this to Dems for years.
However each state is different and in PA we can only vote in the primary in the party in which we are registered. For a very long time I was registered independent, and I was never able to vote in the primary at all. I guess maybe in your state it's a little different.

And except for in DU Fantasy Land, Trump is not going to be impeached and convicted, he is not going to resign, and he is not going to be marched off to a federal prison in an orange jumpsuit.
I'm in Wisconsin so I can vote in whatever primary I please, and I expect a lot of candidates in the Democratic primary, but even if that were not true I'd be damned if I ever cast a vote for Donald Trump.
Who thinks that the best Democratic candidate doesn't need all the help they can get?
Trump will easily be the Republican party nominee for president, and with the Supreme Court firmly in his pocket and the GOP controlling the Senate he can easily drag out anything for 2 years with 1 hand tied behind his back.

(17,862 posts)I wonder how many thought I will give it a go in 2016 because Trump is unelectable. If Kasich had been nominated, I am not entirely convinced that Clinton would have won. There was an incumbent head wind.

(25,278 posts)The primary is where decisions are made in red areas. Pic the sane one.
My husband usually votes in Republican primaries to keep Tea Party candidates off the general election ballot. He's an educator. He's always trying to get one guy off the State Board of Education.
You vote has higher weight in local elections.
