whose family had just moved from Anchorage to Seattle when the quake happened. The parents packed up the family and went back to Anchorage to help. Always thought that was an amazing thing to do.

A good reminder of how important science is to our survival.

I was a Freshman in college on the Central Coast of California. When we heard about the tsunami, a bunch of us went down to a hill overlooking the Pacific to see if we'd be able to observe it. We did, but it was a minor thing at that location. There were estimates of the time it would arrive, and they were pretty accurate.

What is remarkable is that we didn't really understand plate tectonics back then. That was not all that long ago, really - just over 50 years. We have learned so much about our planet since then. About everything, really.

He said you could hear the earthquake coming from the permafrost cracking.

Just had #3----there was NOTHING else on the TV for the entire time I was there----strange the things we remember.
