Im confused. Nancy isnt speaker of the house yet, so who is trump threatening with shut down?
Dont the Republicans still hold the majority until January?
ProfessorGAC
(64,826 posts)Well, aside from the fact that there won't be any shutdown anyway.
On Edit: Even if the Rs in the House try to go out in a blaze of glory and get him his money, the Senate won't pass it forward.
Then if it's a shutdown, it's not ONLY a Trump shutdown, but a shutdown caused by him and a republican congress.
They won't be able to let that happen. They already took a whipping 5 weeks ago. They're not going to pour more gasoline on the fire.

They used it in 2017.

(92,059 posts)the next Congress.
If the lame duck House passes the WALL, and the Senate uses budget reconcilliation to pass it, I think this will come back to bite them in the ass.
anyone, thanks for keeping things honest
pnwmom
(108,952 posts)so DT wants to pressure them both.
And he's pretending that the House already supports a wall and would vote for a budget including it.

(25,907 posts)Chuck Schumer is minority leader in the Senate. Shouldn't fuckstick make his case to the majority leader?

(17,984 posts)Suppose he gets the money he wants. Is it possible for the next congress to withdraw that? I think it is, but I'm not sure.

(42,531 posts)And it's unlikely the Senate, under repub control, would pass such a bill in the first instance.
ProudLib72
(17,984 posts)Personally, I don't think Rump has the votes he needs right now, and he is just using this as an opportunity to rail against his "enemies".
onenote
(42,531 posts)Is for the House and Senate to agree on a funding bill for the government and for Trump to sign it (or for Trump to veto it and have his veto overridden).
ProudLib72
(17,984 posts)The thing I don't know is whether or not he has the votes to cause the shutdown over funding for the wall or if there are enough senators and congresspeople to override his veto (because that appears to be where we are heading). Obviously, other things have been at the top of priority of things to watch.

(59,495 posts)which keeps spending at the level of the last bill. Easier to do, but the down side for Trump is that we control the House when Congress returns in January.
onenote
(42,531 posts)In fact, I'm pretty sure the government shutdown that occurred during the Clinton administration came about when he vetoed a continuing resolution
pecosbob
(7,533 posts)with stop-gap continuing resolutions. The GOP can't even pass a budget when they control both the House and
Senate and hold the presidency. The Freedom Fries Caucus has made sure of that.

(31,777 posts)Around 8:36 a.m. Senator Kennedy (R) of Louisiana was being interviewed on CNN (listening on Sirius) .. .
I don't know who the woman is that was interviewing him life - but she literally did NOT fact check him when he kept calling Nancy Pelosi SPEAKER Pelosi.
Now Paul Ryan needs to do his fucking job NOW.
This is HIS.
It's McConnell's.
They are a lame duck congress - if they want to roll back the CRA, women's right to vote, child labor laws -
All of those sick things to get Donald his wall- they could do it.
This is Trump, McConnell, and Ryan. They and they alone can stop a shut down.
Volaris
(10,266 posts)The Dem controlled house puts a sane bill in the pipe (no wall) will cost LESS than what the stable genius wants for a boondoggle.
Ryan's out anyway and McConnell supposes he can weather the storm long-term, and so the only one who gives a shit is Trump.
And that ain't t gonna be enough lol.
Shutdown for Christmas. Yay.

(7,820 posts)And help him get the votes he needs. Thats why Pelosi was telling him, basically, that they control everything (for a little while longer, at least) Get your own votes- why should we help you with this?!?

(10,437 posts)Have the votes...McConnel doesn't have the votes.
Trump is threatening the American people with the shutdown, cluelessly.
karynnj
(59,495 posts)So ... the right and Trump are making it Shumer's or Pelosi's fault. Pelosi did push back yesterday - pointing that Trump did not have the votes. (meaning he has some Republicans in Congress unwilling to vote for the bill.)
