Biden urges political engagement in Brown University speech

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Former Vice President Joe Biden spoke to more than 2,000 Brown University students this week, criticizing partisan politics and urging students to look toward the future.

Biden spoke Monday at the university's Pizzitola Sports Center, arguing that a perceived political breakdown was caused by nationalism and "phony populism."

The Providence Journal reports that the Democrat argued the "alien strains" of thinking have kept people fighting over the past instead of working to solve problems.

Biden, who is considering a run for president in 2020, also urged students to get more deeply involved in public affairs and politics — saying to the audience "you have the power to change the direction of this country all by yourself if you just get engaged."
