On December 11, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer had a highly contentious meeting with President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence to discuss the prospect of a government shutdown and funding for a border wall. The meeting was short but incredibly tense, with Schumer at one point goading Trump into screaming that he would be proud to shut down the government to build a border wall.
At the end of the meeting, both parties reached a stalemate, but the Democrats, having convinced Trump to cop to the possibility of a government shutdown, appeared to be the victors. That impression was only enhanced by Pelosi, who was photographed leaving the White House wearing a brick-red funnel-necked three-quarter-length coat with dark sunglasses, looking like a goddamn boss.
Almost immediately, Pelosi emerging from the White House became a meme, with everyone from Pentagon reporters to Moonlight director Barry Jenkins gushing over the coat as a power move:
From Kiernan Shipkas wool swing jacket in The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina to Kate Middletons iconic red coat with ruffles, red outerwear is currently having a bit of a moment. At first, the provenance of Pelosis coat was a mystery; while some speculated it was made by designer Carolina Herrera, the New York Times later reported that the coat was the Glamis from Max Maras 2013 outerwear line. (The dark sunglasses were Armani, for what its worth.)
Inspired by the fervor over Pelosis coat, on Wednesday afternoon a spokesperson for the brand issued a press release saying it would reissue the coat for the 2019 outerwear collection. Ian Griffiths, the creative director of Max Mara, told the New York Times: You develop an emotional relationship with a coat like nothing else in your wardrobe. I can imagine why Ms. Pelosi chose to wear it for this important moment, and Im honored.
Powerful coat for a powerful woman. I bet Trump was seeing a lot of red that day.

Nancy looks quite the avant gard sophisticated fashionista there - alot better than Melanoma's fashion for sure.

And of course, confidence and self-assurance play a huge role...

(90,643 posts)In high school I had a closet of hand me downs, but I made them my own with accessories. As a retiree in a casual beachside community I no longer have much occasion to dress up, but several years ago I decided I really wanted a red wool coat for travel to colder climes, so I kept my eye out for a couple of seasons until I found the one I wanted at Macy's at a deep discount. Nice lines, and it will never go out of style.
I don't bother even walking in to stores where ladies of Nancy Pelosi's means are able to shop, nor do I envy those who do, but anyone can develop an eye for what looks eye-catching and fashionable on them without blowing the entire family budget.

(59,501 posts)My mother-in -law and one of my daughters have that ability. Both could put things together that I never would have thought of and it would look perfect. I, on the other hand, often bought the pieces someone at a good store put together or bravely matched any color of skirt with a pretty white blouse. Anything more complicated happened when shopping with that daughter or a similarly talented friend. (My only skill at this was the that I could see something just did "not work".)
As to Pelosi's coat, it is gorgeous and I thought so when I first saw the picture. In retrospect, I am not surprised that it got enough attention that they will reissue it.

I loved it.. it wasn't like Nancy's.. more like a red camel hair style.
It was on sale!
I'm sure you don't have need for it now.

(11,175 posts)All this adulation for Pelosi's coat kind of puts a new perspective on the fulminations when Bernie Sanders was seen in public wearing a $700 coat that was a gift from his stepson (who used to work for the manufacturer).
GulfCoast66
(11,949 posts)Nancy has not made a meme of blaming all our problems on Millionaires and Billionaires. Demonizing honestly earned wealth is not a ticket to electoral success in the US. Hell, I guess technically the wife and I are in that category. And I guess I could buy her that coat. But of course she would kill me if she learned the cost!
But the difference is that I believe I should be paying higher taxes to support universal healthcare and other programs to support all Americans. As does Nancy and all other democrats I support. In the end it would save us all money!
If we are seen as being against traditional aspirational goals we will not win.
What we need to do is convince Americans the key to achieving these aspirational goals is ditching the fucked up trickle down ideology. Because god knows it had not worked. The key is raising poorest up to a higher level. That is what will truly lift all Americans.
Jim Lane
(11,175 posts)You write:
If that's her position, it's quite new. In the current Congress she has not been an advocate for HR 676. In fact, although a majority of the members of the Democratic caucus signed on as cosponsors, Pelosi did not.
Still, I don't completely disagree with you. You write:
Exactly right! One place to start would be the $15 minimum wage, which just so happens to be a key plank in Bernie's platform. Your distortion of his platform is taken straight from the right-wing smear machine.
GulfCoast66
(11,949 posts)Including expanded Medicaid was pretty much universal healthcare.
I did not say single payer, which I and many good democrats do not support.
Jim Lane
(11,175 posts)Obviously there was Republican ratfuckery. Even without that, however, the Heritage Foundation plan that became the ACA by way of Romneycare was not universal healthcare.
GulfCoast66
(11,949 posts)And was driven thru by Speaker Pelosi.
The ACA is the vehicle we can use to get to universal healthcare using the model several European nations have used. In way too short a nutshell- make insurance companies nonprofit, raise taxes in a progressive manner to levels closer to the 70s, and keep employers on the hook, which is the key to public approval. Most people want healthcare for everyone and are even will to pay something extra for it. But the 50% of Americans that still get their healthcare from their employer will reject any plan that puts that paradigm at risk.
Finally, no matter what plan we come up with until we drastically cut our defense budget the money is not there.
But let me be clear. While I do not favor working towards single payer for strategic and practical reasons, I would trade the mess we have now for it in a heartbeat.
This is way off topic on a thread about a jacket!
Have a nice day.
Jim Lane
(11,175 posts)The thread isn't primarily about a coat. If Miley Cyrus had worn that exact same coat to an awards show, no one on DU would give a damn about it.
A certain element on DU was all over Bernie Sanders because he wore an expensive coat that was a gift. Now people are cheering Nancy Pelosi for wearing an even more expensive coat that she probably paid for. The different treatment is instructive.
We're now closer to the 2020 election than to the 2016 election. Perhaps it's time for some people to reconsider their hatred of Bernie Sanders, or at least to start dialing it down to ordinary opposition.
GulfCoast66
(11,949 posts)But whatever.
Anyway, it is a beautiful coat on a strong leader.

Of course, Nancy has the money to pay for it and she hasn't begrudged others having money.
I think it's great Dems are enthused about it so much that they Want That Coat!

(12,646 posts)Lined in ivory silk with square ebony buttons. It was a calf-length sheath coat cut with kimono sleeves and a wide shawl collar that draped across the shoulders as if it were a fur stole or could be pulled up like a hood. Perfect for walking down 5th Avenue in the winter. She promised I could have it as part of her will - which was never updated since her husband died in 1966...
When she passed, her "lawyers" decided since she never had kids, everything she owned could be auctioned off to settle her estate. And that it would be fine to just give any near relatives or anyone her husband had in his will $5k to go away and not bother them for the rest of the $5 million or so they recouped from that auction. That coat was auctioned off for $18k at Sotherby's.
I still curse them whenever I see a really nice red wool coat.

(89,247 posts)i don't think i would have thought much about it if not for hearing the name from Pelosi's red coat . the Max Mara i saw was a different one but it was nice and 25 dollars and in good condition. the only problem was it was too small . but i would have gotten it if it was a bit larger just because i remembered the name from Pelosi's coat.
