Actress and director Penny Marshall died Monday night at the age of 75, according to TMZ. According to her publicist Michelle Bega, Marshall died “peacefully” in her Hollywood Hills home from “complications from diabetes.” Marshall became well known for her role in the 1976 Laverne & Shirley sitcom, which ran until 1983. She went on to direct several hit moves, including Big and A League of Their Own.
“Our family is heartbroken over the passing of Penny Marshall,” her family said in a statement. “Penny was a tomboy who loved sports, doing puzzles of any kind, drinking milk and Pepsi together and being with her family.” The New York Daily News reports the family plan on holding a “celebration of her life” at a later date.
Marshall is reportedly survived by her “older sister Ronny, her daughter and three grandkids — Spencer, Bella and Viva.”

1. She was great! Always Laverne to me, but

I did so enjoy "A League of Their Own."

3. She was a great comedian but a groundbreaking director.

So few women directed when she did, and she had a brilliant eye for what charmed and made people laugh while actually saying something.
