White House Rats

“Dead cats, dead rats
Can't see what they were at, all right
Dead cat in a top hat, wow
Sucking on the young man's blood
Wishing he could come, yeah
Sucking on the soldier's brain
Wishing it would be the same
Dead cat, dead rat
Can't you see what they were at?
Fat cat in a top hat
Thinks he's an aristocrat
Thinks he can kill and slaughter
Thinks he can shoot my daughter
Yeah right! Oh yeah!
Oh right! Yeeah!Dead cats, dead rats
Think they're an aristocrat
Crap, now that's crap!”
-- Jim Morrison

Mark Twain said the only difference between a cat and a lie is that a cat only has nine lives. We can skip the cat, since the rat in the White House has told 6,420+ lies while acting as president, repeating many of these over ten times. A number of those oft-repeated lies have been coming back to haunt him in 2018. It seemed appropriate that his worst time in the White House came around the time of the winter solstice, which suggests the old fool is going to be facing progressively longer days for the next six months.

A while back, I posted an essay here that focused on Trump's personality – if it can be called that – followed by another essay predicting what behaviors could be anticipated in the near future. We have already seen some of the things that people on those threads spoke of come to pass. As the pressures continue to grow in the weeks and months between now and the spring equinox, we can be confident that he will become more unhinged, and likely more destructive in his efforts to damage the institutions of our federal government.

This is, of course, the bad news of my New Year's predictions. Yet this, too, shall pass. We have already seen a growing resentment of Trump on the part of some republicans in the House and Senate. It goes without saying that this to too little, too late, to warrant any praise of these cowards. But it is a hint of things to come, and Trump knows this.

He cannot afford a significant split in the republican party, but it will become harder for him, before it then becomes impossible. To try to prevent this, Trump will continue to try to divide the Democrats and republicans with actions like the government shutdown. He will follow up on attempts to destabilize the world with his “policies” in international affairs. Predators – and Donald Trump is a predator in the most literal sense – are always ready to sacrifice others for their own entertainment and comfort.

The good news is that such predators are often, like Trump, without deep intellect, much less common sense. They eventually become the victim of their predatory behaviors. Among other dynamics, those lies not only catch up, as in the Mueller, the Southern District of New York, and two lesser-known federal investigations into decades of Trump's “family business,” they serve as self-set rat traps. Indeed, sociopaths tell lies, even when the truth would better serve their vile purposes.

By late March, the crimes of Trump, his family, and his associates will much more fully exposed. More republicans will find it impossible to defend the Trump mob. The legal cases in the courts and the House committee investigations will be plowing the decaying feces known by the brand name “the Trump administration” under. And much of what might seem to be rotting will instead be understood to be part of the necessary process of germination. And between late March and June, those of us at the grass roots level will have the opportunity to plant the seeds of democracy as a follow-up to the fantastic efforts made for the last elections.

Trump thinks he was alone in the last day or so? He has no clue of how alone he's about to be.

3. Thank you!

I'm feeling mighty confident about the future. I think the Democratic Party is in a very good place right now, and will begin to make serious, positive advances in 2019. Now, that will take a lot of hard work, but it will be harder on us if we don't make the required effort. And I include everyone, from the grassroots level to Washington DC.

Having grown up on a small farm with large gardens, I enjoy this type of thing.

4. Thank you!

And Merry Christmas to you and yours!

It was nice to spend time with the extended family last night, and my children today. My kids know that as a product of my generation, I associate this season with The Beatles. Among other Beatles presents, I got the big anniversary collection of the White Album. It's been my favorite for fifty years now!

serves me correctly -- rare at this point in life -- we used to make numerous Beatle references in the classic Plame Scandal Threads.

6. Kudos! We'll keep trying to hang in there.

Spouse's 401(k) is probably gone, but his work isn't. At 69, it's hard doing a 55 hour week, but he does anyway.

A lot of what's keeping us going is knowing sTrump will wind up in prison.

13. Thank you.

Trump has inflicted a lot of damage, and people are hurting because of it. It isn't right that anyone 69 years old has to work to get by, and even more so 55 hours a week. These things have got to change.

21. I work from home (disabled), and it's mostly enjoyable.

But we're in a cabin with a ladder to the loft, so it's difficult getting up and down. For both of us. We ARE going to get rid of the orange shitgibbon!!

Try to never fail to hope! And rock on!

14. Thanks!

On one of the previous OP/threads I mentioned, you had expressed concern that he would start a war to create an "emergency." Shortly thereafter, he made his decisions about Syria, then Afghanistan. There will be flare-ups in violence in both. He is actively destabilizing that area …..not that it was even close to "stable."

I'm friends with a college student who grew up in Syria. She's in the US for her education. Listening to her speak of the horrors in Syria is painful.

9. I was going to reply that I am optimistic as well but the fact is until we deal with Fox, Hannity,

and Limbaugs on the right nothing will ever really change. Their lies and inaccurate reporting has done more to harm and divide this country than Trump ever has. Without Fox,Trump is nothing. If Fox were to abandon Trump he wouldn’t last 2 weeks, he would resign. The positive feedback loop that is Fox and Trump sustains him. Mentally and physically Trump would fold like a cheap suit if he didn’t have Fox in his corner. I hate Fox and Murdoch

16. Very interesting

and important. You are right in that Trump's presidency didn't just happen ….the social-political environment allowed for his diseased character to assume the presidency. And the right-wing media was a huge influence.

I like to view all social-political constructs by using the model of a mobile hanging over an infant's crib. When one piece moves, all of the others must adjust. (Otherwise, the one piece is essentially cut off by the entrenched pieces.) We are seeing the beginnings of that shift, as the Mueller & SDNY pieces are on the move. Some cowardly republicans are beginning to voice opposition to Trump, if only to insure the comfort of their own place on the mobile. And a few Fox cast members are starting to call Trump out.

One important issue that you highlight is that the alt-right will become more entrenched, hence more actively dangerous. I so wish that was not the case, but it surely is. We will need to isolate them, then cut them off from civilized society.

out Trump for Syria was fun to watch.

23. I'm actually feeling pretty optimistic

I think that the definite swerve to the Right to the point of it becoming the Alt Right over the last few decades will be stopped by the new House. Hopefully action can be taken to both reverse the inertia and to fix the failings that allowed someone like Trump to happen. I think it will be a long fight, maybe years, maybe even decades, but as long as we’re making real progress it’s OK.

The blue wave has renewed my faith because we averted taking the wrong fork of the road. The real fight is still to come. I’m ready.
