Trump handed out campaign paraphernalia to troops

The President of the United States is using a Christmas visit to the troops in Iraq to disseminate campaign paraphernalia?

Walter Schaub deleted the above tweet because he doesn't want the soldiers getting blamed.

I took down a tweet about what Trump did on his trip to Iraq because I’m worried about the chance that someone might blame the soldiers. It’s not their fault. Trump’s engaging in campaign activity during this trip is on Trump and Trump alone. Disgusting. Truly disgusting. Shame!

6. It was from Walter Schaub. He explains why he took it down

7. Thank you for the follow up

I disagree with Shaub though, he should have left it up. No one would blame the troops just for being there.
That said, If they took the campaign stuff or wire or used it, than they violated UCMJ regulations and should be held accountable, just like trump.

9. disgusting republican cheapskate

Shuts the government down, then uses government funds to fly off on a personal campaign for his own benefit.

Frikking republicans have cesspool ethics. really.

11. From The Hill

He didn't hand them out - he signed hats the soldiers broght with them.

The president signed several red “Make America Great Again” hats service members had brought as well as a “Trump 2020” patch.

I don't know what is actually true - but I can't find anything that says he handed out hats, since Shaub delted his tweet and we don't know exactly what it was he was reporting.

Or were given beforehand by the advance team?

13. Brought with them is what is reported,

in the only report I can find. I've been looking for more detail & can't find any.

And it fits wtih Schaub deleting his tweet for fear the soldiers would be blamed (with violating the Hatch act).

19. Probably quite a while, since he formed his re-election committee

almost immediately after his election. (That's why he's been holding campaign rallys almost since day 1).

All I can do is go by what i can find - and I can't find anyone suggesting he gave them out, rather than signing ones the troops brought.

21. If any of the troops had that stuff on them ,

they’re violating the USMJC code against politicking. Trump just got them in a hell of a lot of trouble.

22. That's apparently why the Twitter user who reported it deleted his tweet -

he didn't want the soldiers to get into trouble. (That's the gist of the follow-up tweet explaining why he deleted the first one.)

And it's consistent with this article:

15. Of course he did.

This was a campaign trip designed to win back military and ex-military voters after the Mattis resignation and letter.

20. He formed his re-election commitee almost as soon as the election was over.

That's the basis for all of his rallys since shorftly after inauguration.

ETA:
Pool reporters said that some of the troops had brought their own hats, including one that said “Trump 2020.”
