Maybe Martha's memory is faulty, because a quick Google search shows that the following First Ladies have gone to combat zones, some more dangerous than the one Melanoma went to today:
Eleanor Roosevelt (who made multiple visits)
Pat Nixon
Barbara Bush
Hillary fucking Clinton
Laura Bush
Michelle Obama went to visit troops in Qatar
We need to bombard ABC with tweets and emails until they correct the record.
One more I wasn't sure about until I checked: Mary Todd Lincoln

Uninformed, opinionated reporting such as this is misleading to many, perhaps most.
Just sayin'.

(42,691 posts)Eleanor Roosevelt visited troops throughout WWII, and while some historians question whether her visits were to active war zones, I think she gets credit for doing so.
And Pat Nixon visited Vietnam in 1969. On the other hand, my quick google search didn't turn up any examples of Barbara or Laura Bush visiting a war zone. And no one thinks Qatar is a "war zone." Finally, while Hillary visited Bosnia (a trip that became the source of great controversy itself), it's noteworthy that the right had a field day criticizing the press (including the Washington Post and Newsweek) for describing that trip as the first time a first lady had visited a war zone. Were the press simply trying to normalize Bill Clinton?
The attacks on the press here at DU are troubling given that they end up reinforcing Trump's attacks. Yes, the media makes mistakes and describing Melania's visit to Iraq as a first is mistake. But at attempt to normalize Trump? Not really.

And it's not like Melania went anywhere more dangerous than Michelle did in going to Qatar. Laura Bush did leave confines of US bases in Afghanistan, which would have put her at considerable risk. Eleanor Roosevelt had to travel across the Pacific which might have been one of the most hazardous trips undertaken by a First Lady.
