800,000 is terrible, but 37,000,000 is catastrophic

I can't even imagine how difficult it must be to be one of the 800,000 government workers who are getting laid off with no pay or forced to work for free. Not all government workers will get back pay either - especially those who are considered "independent contractors." Many of them won't get so much as a dime.

Making America "Great" by turning American workers into slaves for - oh, two or three months, maybe two or three years. But all you Federal workers are just fine with this. We know this because the malignant narcissist in the White House came on TV and told us so. Or maybe he tweeted that one. It's so hard to keep up these days, especially when your mind keeps obsessing about going hungry along with 38 Million other Americans who must depend on food stamps (SNAP) that will lose their funding in 3 weeks when February rolls around.

Me, I'm 67 but I became disabled when I was 51. The catastrophic medical bills cut through my savings like a hot knife through butter. These days I get by on a tiny social security check, a housing voucher and SNAP. There's no margin for error in my monthly budget. I consider it to be a good month when I manage to hit the 30th with my rent and electric bills paid up; my Internet didn't get turned off (not this time, anyhow); and some eggs, bread and coffee to tide me over until there's money on my SNAP card again.

I volunteer as an advocate with the Colorado Cross Disability Coalition when I'm able to. I could tell you all so many heartbreaking stories about low income disabled people around here. There's the woman a judge sent to the county jail for being a schizophrenic. She languished there for months with no evaluation and certainly no treatment. I know of more people than I can count who are disabled and homeless who camp on the public lands.

And I will never forget the woman and her son with Downs Syndrome. She was trying to leave her abusive husband and had managed to finally escape the little fundamentalist Mormon town they had been living in. Mother and son also camped out in a trailer on public land. CCDC had been trying to arrange for housing and medical care for both of them. Then one day the local social services office told the Mom that she and her son did not qualify for food stamps. That poor woman was so beaten down that she went into hysterics at the news and threatened to kill herself. Terrible, terrible situation.

Many people in my small town on Colorado's mostly rural Western Slope aren't doing as well as I am. I am next door neighbors with both the Ute Reservation and the Navajo Nation. The poverty among many of the Utes and Navajo is simply heart breaking. Any time I want to start feeling sorry for myself, all I have to do is walk down the dirt road that leads to the mostly Ute town of Toawoc. It's like stepping into the third world. Folks who live there are largely dependent on programs administered by the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), a Federal Agency which is now also going unfunded. Always hit the most vulnerable first, right?

We don't have any of those cool Colorado resort jobs around here. It's mostly low wage agricultural and tourist trade work. Retirees with decent pensions give the local economy a shot in the arm, but we need more than just shots. Sometimes I think we need a war. What will the people who depend on food stamps do come next month? Two of the local churches trade off on running the soup kitchen. What will happen to that soup kitchen when it becomes overwhelmed by the need to help all the people who suddenly no longer have the means to put food on their tables? The Federal commodities program which distributes food boxes to qualifying low income folk will not be funded either.

Then I try to imagine all the other communities both large and small; urban and rural all across the nations that will be experiencing the same frankly impossible situation that we will be here. Worst of all, little kids are going to go hungry. You can't just suddenly throw 38 million people at private charities and community soup kitchens that were already overwhelmed and expect that the hungry will get fed. Some of us won't.

Oh, how I despise Donald Trump.

More people are living better than they ever have across the planet due to a variety of factors but the ones who are the richest are getting richer and keeping it for themselves. The GOP belongs in this selfish, greedy, hypocritical group with the other uber rich. It is like the Gilded Age again.

https://www.democraticunderground.com/111684491

"While these economic shifts are positive, it’s the other end of the global wealth spectrum that attracts the most attention. A high degree of wealth creation is amassed by those at the top of the economic pyramid.

THE TOP-HEAVY WEALTH SPECTRUM
Today, slightly less than 1% of the world’s adult population occupies the $1M+ wealth range. Despite their small numbers, this elite group collectively controls 46% of the world’s wealth, valued at approximately $129 trillion."

I'd say no. The cuts won't come until February and your clients are probably like so many working class folk and people with disabilities. They don't follow politics because they're too busy trying to put food on the table and keep a roof over their heads. So many have difficulty planning even a week in advance, never mind a month. But if the shutdown continues into February, you will be overwhelmed by desperate folks whose SNAP cards no longer work. Let's pray this won't happen.

contract employees who know they won't get back pay and the similarly unpaid private companies (contractors) who hire them just might not be available, having been forced to find other work to pay their bills. Even some civil service employees might give up and seek other employment.

It could take quite a while to adequately staff a lot of foundational functions again.

None of this is "fake news." I get most of my information from the [failing] New York Times and the WaPo. Here's an excerpt from a story published in the [failing] New York Times in the January 3rd, 2019 edition:

"In addition to the federal workers, thousands of people who work for contractors — cleaning offices or serving food — are missing wages, but are not considered in proposed legislation that promises back pay once a deal is worked out.

'Just to think about it, it’s so frightening,' said Donna Kelly, a contracted security guard who works — or did work, before the museums closed on Wednesday — at the Smithsonian Institution. She had applied for unemployment benefits, but was still waiting for her application to be processed... ”

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/03/us/government-shutdown-workers-pay.html

The main point of my post was about the suffering that so many low income folks who depend on the SNAP program will go through if food stamps don't get funded by the end of this month. I am one of those people, and we are very, very real.

How dare you imply otherwise?

What sane person would fight a war by forcing little kids, seniors, the disabled and others among society's most vulnerable to stand in the front lines?

You WATCHED the Caterpillar workers. Did you do anything to actually help them? And what sacrifices are you making to help win this war? You are asking all the employees of independent contractors to go without pay, go without even back pay for an indefinite length of time. You are asking 5 year olds from low income families to go hungry. You are asking people like myself to lose their housing because HUD has also closed down - another thing that has so far being sadly under-reported by the MSM.

You urge others to do what you will not. I say this because anyone who has actually gone without groceries for an extended period of time, anyone who has been homeless, anyone who has had to stave off all the wolves that appear at the door when they get laid off - would not respond in such a cavalier fashion.

The United States of America is NOT the equivalent of the Caterpillar Corp. Frankly, I'm wondering why you waste your time posting on DU. You come across as a Republican, bottom line.

has never helped anybody feel better about going through anything.

If you were one of the striking Caterpillar workers, would you like someone to tell you about impoverished people who starved to death or died from lack of health insurance or got injured badly on the job with no disability benefits? Corporations have used that logic to screw over American workers by telling them that people in developing countries will work under worse conditions for lower pay.

One of the main reasons corporations and government agencies use contractors is that we are disposable and don't have labor unions like employees.

I live in the diagonally opposite corner of the state. Unfortunately, Weld County is owned and operated by the GOP; some of our county commissioners were so upset with the midterm results that they actually started talking secession again.

My disability became "official" in '92 after eight years of trying, the last three of which were spent struggling to walk much of the time, mostly bedridden for the final year. And they used those three years to determine an "income average" to set my monthly benefit. Like you and many others I rely on several programs for assistance, and the fear of losing that help is always hovering nearby. When I got the notice from Social Security that I was getting a small COLA I told a friend that I'd hear from the county before the week was over telling me of a reduction in SNAP due to the COLA 'windfall'; that note arrived two days later, and the reduction essentially left me with a COLA of $1.

At 70 and with considerable health issues I can't go out and get a job. On more than one occasion I've been threatened with loss of benefits should they decide that I'm faking age and infirmity by selling $20 worth of campaign buttons. Housing terminated my grandfathered two-bedroom apartment and required a move to a one bedroom, then told me that since I was living in a smaller place their contribution would be smaller; thus, my rent went up 40%.

So, yeah, I get it. We're the easy pickings. And what's worse is that, as you noted, there are so many worse off who share the blame of being both cause and effect of the nation's ills. I loathe trump precisely because he is the perfect embodiment of the vicious avarice that has become the uniform of choice of the republican party. By their effort our chief executive does not govern; rather, he is the whip wielder in what has become deliberate and systematic abuse. And what those who support him don't realize is that when we're gone, they're next.

What are our values as a society? In reality, there is only one - money. The poor are viewed with suspicion if not outright contempt. If anyone thinks that this country has an actual social safety net, think again. The poor are hounded over every last penny with threats of the loss of "benefits" if they manage to get so much as $20 ahead of the game. Meanwhile, corporate welfare becomes more burdensome to the people of this country by the day. With a mere handshake and a wink wink, billions if not trillions get stashed away in offshore banks. Yet our government cares more about harassing people like you and me over a lousy one dollar from COLA.

What you say is heartbreaking. I struggled a couple of times in my life, needing to rely on the kindness of others in order to eat or have a place to live, so I know a little of what you’re saying. The constant worry was always accompanied by the grip of knots in my stomach and the fear of not knowing what would happen next. Someone said that poverty is violence and they were right.

All of my income comes from the federal government. I collect SSDI, Federal Employee Retirement, and a sizable disability payment from the VA. When I get paid, I can do well for myself, but I can’t afford to go for months on end without any income.

Aside from just me, my kids depend on me being able to pay my ex-wife child support. What happens when I can’t pay child support and I become a “dead beat dad”? Is the state not going to go after my driver license because the feds can’t get their shit together and pay me? What about the state charging me with a felony for it?
