Critically endangered marine mammal, the vaquita, NEEDS YOUR HELP NOW!!!

I posted this previously under the Animal Rights thread and another member suggested that I post it here also for greater visibility.

Current aerial surveys estimate the population of the vaquita, a shy beautiful porpoise, at less than 30 and attempts at captive breeding lead to the death to one of the captured females so attempts have been halted. Wikipedia has a great summary:

The only group that appears to be doing anything constructive (I contribute, but I'm not a member or employee) is the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. Some people consider them controversial (I do not), but they are leading an effort in cooperation with the Mexican government to save the vaquita. They are conducting anti-poaching patrols and removing the nets that are killing the vaquita and other aquatic animals in the Gulf of California (including other critically endangered species).
I just sent a contribution to Sea Shepherd, and I'm considering dropping my contributions to all other environmental groups and praying the population will stabilize in the next couple of years.
Please consider supporting the Sea Shepherds. If you can't please check out the video and pass it to someone who may be interested.

Just recently the first dolphin in modern times was declared extinct. I know we are fighting fires on a hundred fronts, but the situation is truly dire and according to the Wikipedia article, Mexico's current environmental minister has given up on the vaquita.

I've been a reader for years, but these are my first original posts. This issue has been stressing me a lot since I've learned how critical things are. I thank you for taking the time to read this post, and would appreciate your rec's. I'm hoping to kick this to the front page with your help.

What a shame the fishermen haven't been willing to go to the trouble of saving them. They know they are almost gone, too. The Mexican government has tried everything to protect them.

Thanks for posting the link! 🙏Always makes it more convenient.

I've been a long, long-term donor to the Sea Shepherd. They've put their lives on the line to save cetaceans, all of which are very intelligent.
