My wife and I are in the process of opening a business. We have an SBA loan approved and were scheduled to close on December 27. We were required to have our downpayment in the bank at the time, a six figure amount, every penny we could scrape up. That money has to be there for us to close. SBA is closed until the shutdown is over. No closing until they reopen
Also, my wife has worked as a government contractor for 30 years and was scheduled to start a new government contract on January 1. That is postponed until the government is reopened.
Loan on hold, every penny is savings tied up and zero income and no back pay when the shutdown ends.
I've had to go to the business property owner and explain all of this and he was very understanding.
The owners of the home we lease were not understanding. trump supporters.
I've talked to cable, internet, cellphone, etc and we can put them off a couple weeks but that's it. Car loan would not even listen.
We are very stressed and depressed and don't know what to do.
trump said we should simply adjust and that he can relate.
I guess we could take the business downpayment out of the bank and lose the business we've spent two years and a huge amount of money on. We have no good options.

I hope it ends soon, before your problems become completely unfixable.

this #TrumpShutdown is really bad and your story illustrates it well.
i am so sorry you are having to go through this. trump and his enabling #GOPTraitors are the sorriest bunch of anti Americans in my lifetime if not the country's history.

(4,290 posts)You mentioned bank in your post, but its worth asking if you are CU members. I know of several that are extending zero-interest loans and other relief to families impacted by the shut-down. Even if youre not members now, you may be able to join. Worst they can do is say Sorry, no.

A drop in bucket, but better than nothing.

(257 posts)Jim, I am a federal retiree/military vet who lives in Vegas. Last week, an ABC reporter contacted me about my shutdown experience but, since I retired in 2014, I was not impacted by this shutdown. She asked if I knew of any current federal retirees who had stories to tell about the current shutdown, but all my former colleagues have left the fed or are exempted by the shutdown as essential personnel.
If you want the reporters contact info, send me a private message. It cant hurt to email her.
Best of luck.

(45,380 posts)A few too many DUers refused to believe me when I said many contractors are on an unpaid work stoppage. That was the most frustrating part of this shutdown, even worse than the Trumpsters gloating online.
There are low-paid contractors who are paid close to minimum wage for janitorial and food service work and nobody can spare some empathy for them either. They have a work stoppage and are not being paid. It's hard to find other work on short notice, especially when everyone else is also applying for other jobs on short notice. Lots of folks won't make rent this month. Student loans and financial aid is affected for many students and veterans. A good many things were scheduled to start in January but did not get the funding, so people who count on it are being screwed for no good reason.
Good luck

We will have to transition to another related field. Basically no income for 6 months

(10,823 posts)It's completely unfair and unacceptable. Also think this type of personal story, an honest, detailed account of the hardship caused by the shutdown is the only thing that will turn Republican sentiment, their refusal to acknowledge the damage the man is doing to ordinary citizens.
Your story is no doubt replicated x 1000s if not tens of 1000s, stories giving witness to those across the country caught in the lurch because of one man's vanity and ignorance. And the Party that would follow that same man over the abyss taking everyone with them.
For your sake, I hope this situation turns around, sooner rather than later. I think you've done your best to mitigate the damage by calling creditors, requesting grace periods where you can.
Wish I had some additional good advice. But I simply don't.

(1,002 posts)So many of us are or will be badly impacted by this government shutdown at the hands of a spoiled child who will do anything to get his own way. I am a disabled senior who can no longer work and I count on food stamps and a housing voucher since my social security check is far from generous. If the shutdown stretches into next month, I have no idea what I will do for food and rent.
I despise Donald Trump.

(3,055 posts)This is going to break soon, and I'll be willing to bet you'll get back pay. The bank won't repossess the car over one missed payment, and nobody's going to turn anything off on you. My late husband and I went through a couple of serious rough patches financially in our life, and I found most people will work with you. And I think under these circumstances, there will be some empathy & sympathy. It's not like you guys put yourself in this situation because you couldn't control your spending.
As for your landlords...they're assholes, and as soon as you can you should move out. Without notice.

(3,055 posts)My dad worked for the government, but not as a contractor. And back then we didn't have crazy presidents who would pull shit like this, so it was never an issue. And this makes Trump a bigger asshole than I thought. Hopefully enough Republicans can read the writing on the wall (no pun intended) and A)pass the bill to reopen the government by a veto proof margin, and B)support this bill.

(8,614 posts)Our company is a fairly large Fed Gov contractor. We have had dozens of stop work orders. The project I work on is not directly affected since we have some funding previously approved.. but if this goes on much longer we will also have to stop work.
Hope this gets resolved soon... for you and all of us.
Take care and good luck!
