The #GOP needs to stop playing games w/ hardworking federal workers' lives!
Fund the goverment & then argue for the wall. One has nothing to do w/ the other!
Jacinda says she has "no idea" what her family will do if the government shutdown continues past January. Her husband's last paycheck was Dec. 28 and, like many federal workers, he's unlikely to get his next one at the end of this week. He may not get the one after that, due at the end of January, either.
"Our rent is due, the electric bill is due, our cellphones are now past due," she says.
Her husband is a TSA officer in Portland, Ore., but he's not speaking publicly because the Transportation Security Administration forbids personnel to do so.
"We are a paycheck-to-paycheck family," Jacinda, 36, says. We're not using her last name because she fears he could be fired.

(12,207 posts)If I was the landlord, I would like to give 'em a few months break. But then, how do I pay the property tax, sewer tax and water bill? Where does the money come from to pay $800 for the bed bug infestation? Or the plumbing bill?

McConnell is now sharing ownership of the TrumpShutdown, by not allowing any Senators to voice their opinion through voting.

(3,433 posts)My first smart phone was 5 years ago . Before that I used cheap prepaid just in case of an emergency. I hate how much the smartphone captures my attention. I wish I didnt need it for work

(21,916 posts)They weren't cheap either.
Some of us had to have more than one. I'm an independent businessman and used to work out of my home. Accordingly, we had a line for the family, a line for my business and another for my fax machine (remember those?).
The phone companies charged calls by distance and time. Those bills added up quickly.
That's how we existed before cell phones.

(127,271 posts)I have a printer/copier/scanner/FAX machine and actually had to FAX something a couple months ago!
Instead of using my landline on that machine, I use my triple-play phone line on it. That way, all the junk robo calls that the number always gets, will hit the FAX machine, which just beeps and boops in response, and then disconnects.

(21,916 posts)I got rid of my landlines 6 or 7 years ago. iPhone from now on. It has worked great and been extremely reliable. Importantly, the cost has been relatively modest and cell coverage is almost a non-existent issue.
I still have my fax/copier/scanner/printer and use it primarily as a color printer. My regular printer is an HP LaserJet that is almost 15 years old and it works as well as the day I bought it.

(127,271 posts)...although where I have recently moved had FIOS installed, which is useless in a power outage (like I just had yesterday) vs the old copper lines (even with a battery backup), so I have started wavering. I have a Digitone call blocker on the landline and that thing has been an absolute life saver.
I did find this that sounded interesting for iPhones - https://www.businessinsider.com/brilliant-new-app-will-blast-screeching-fax-tones-in-telemarketers-ears-until-they-never-call-you-again-2015-2
I don't get that many robocalls on my cell phones but the Comcast triple play line gets all kinds of crap so they get this in return from my FAX machine -
