Sen. Maize Hirono Just Humiliated Mitch McConnell On The Shutdown

Sen. Maize Hirono Just Humiliated Mitch McConnell On The Shutdown

Sen. Maize Hirono (D-HI) called out McConnell for being a coward who could end the government shutdown but wonít use his power and do his job.

Sen. Hirono said on MSNBCís All In with Chris Hayes:

Thatís one of the lamest excuses Iíve heard from somebody who has the power to bring the House pass bills to keep the government open and who had no reluctance to use the powers to force a vote eliminating the Affordable Care Act for millions of people or to change the requirement for how many people it would take to put a Supreme Court justice on the court with Gorsuch and Kavanaugh. He had no problem using his power to prevent Merrick Garland from being considered and yet, yet, heíll say I have no power to bring these bills to the floor.

That is so lame and the excuse he gave. We are a separate branch of government. I donít need to remind Mitch McConnell that the Congress is a separate branch of government and what we should do and what he should do, because there are two people to stop the shut down right now, one is the president who is a hostage taker having taken 800,000 people hostage, not to mention the thousands and thousands of contractors, he is a hostage taker. We do not negotiate with hostage takers. The other person to end the shutdown is Mitch Mcconnell because he has the power. He wonít do it. Everyone should be asking why arenít going to use the power you had no problems to force $1.5 trillion tax cut for the richest people in our country and basically screwing the middle class, why donít you do it?

And he says oh, because the president wonít sign it. There is a thing called overriding the veto. Chris, you have a lot of people that watch your show all over the country. I would say to every one of your viewers who live in districts represented by Republican Senators, they should call up their Senators and say go and tell Mitch Mcconnell to do his job, bring these bills on the floor because we already in the Senate passed these last year and make sure that everyone gets paid. He wonít do it. So itís very clear to me who can end this shutdown. I do not rely on the president because he is immoral, makes no distinction between right or wrong or doesnít care. I wonít rely on this guy but Mitch McConnell can do something about this.

Sen. Hirono was correct. Mitch McConnell does have the power to end this shutdown. He wonít because he knows that a non-wall funded bill to reopen the government would easily pass the Senate and have a veto-proof majority. If Trump vetoed the legislation, the Senate would override his veto.

McConnell had no trouble throwing his power around before, but with Democrats in control of the House, he revealed himself to be nothing more than another cowardly Trump lap dog.

2. She said clearly what all Dems should point out-that McConnell can easily end the shutdown

Glad to finally hear someone make it clear that there are enough votes to override a Trump veto if only McConnell would put up the same bill Senate passed before Christmas which Trump refused to sign causing shutdown.

The RW media echo chamber is still a considerable force for anyone that doesn't want to be primaries from the Right to reckon with and Trump can spin a wonderful tweet storm.

46. Until there is a vote we won't know

My point and the point of a lot of posts on this thread is that the threat of Trumpís veto should not prevent the Senate from voting on these bills.

It is possible to override his veto, especially if this shutdown continues for another week or two.

56. I got your point the first time

And I dislike McConnell just as much as anyone on this board, but even as screwed up as he has been, is and certainly will be, there are still things beyond his control (say perhaps like that Zany fellow in the White House). If The "Esteemed" Mr. Trump isn't going to sign the bill and he knows he won't sign the bill, what is the point of bringing it up?

61. "What is the point of bringing it up?"

The point is that McTurtle, once again, won't even allow a vote on a bill; so how will we even know whether or not there are 67 votes to override a Spanky veto without a Senate vote?

Hey, once again, people

There are a YUGE bunch of Senators and House members that have received illegal campaign contributions from Russia, just as Trump has, laundered thru the NRA......

McConnell has taken millions and millions in NRA campaign donations, as have a whole big bunch of Republican Senators and House Members..........

They are NO-WAY going to do anything but what Trump/NRC/Putin want them to do. They know that they are every bit, if not more so, in complicity with this whole thing, And will crash and burn along with Trump unless they succeed at any cost.........THE REPUBLICAN PARTY HAS ADOPTED THE ADAGE, "THE MEANS JUSTIFIES THE END".....period........

my question still stands: why? what's going on behind the scenes?

I would love for someone of Bob Woodward's caliber to investigate this. Mueller's investigation is all about laws broken, and that's what it needs to be. But he's a cop: he's not concerned with why, only with laws broken.

When someone acts the way McC and T are acting, there's something behind the scenes.

Once a bill has been passed by both Senate and house, if the president vetoes it, the Senate can vote again to override. The house is not involved at that stage.

"override of a veto - The process by which each chamber of Congress votes on a bill vetoed by the President. To pass a bill over the president's objections requires a two-thirds vote in each Chamber. Historically, Congress has overridden fewer than ten percent of all presidential vetoes."

We are wasting too much time bashing Trump. McConnell is happy to see all the focus on Trump because it gives him cover. That's why I was very happy to see Senator Hirono stay on that point; picking up the cue from Nancy Pelosi where she said:

'Do you take an oath to the Constitution or an oath to Donald Trump?'

Democrats and media need to hit McConnell over and over again.

53. Yep. They are EXACTLY that. Public SERVANTS. WE taxpayers are THEIR EMPLOYERS.

I was at a meeting in Kurt Schrader's office (my new DINO congressman - DEAR GOD DO I MISS TED LIEU!!!!!!!!) with my Indivisible group, and when it was my turn to speak, that's precisely the language I used. "As his employer, I ... " and "as his employers`, we ... "

See Post 36 above. A report about one Len Blavatnik, an individual with US and UK citizenship, Ukrainian (OF COURSE!!!)-born billionaire who's friends with Russian oligarchs close to Putin, Oleg Deripaska in particular. Doling out some "6.35 million dollars to republican candidates and incumbent senators, using two holding companies, Access Industries and A1 Altep Holdings."

If the above report is true, then ol' Mitchy-boy is bought and paid-for. Linked to Putin. ($3.5 million)

So is Lindsey Graham. ($800K)

So is Marco Rubio. (1.5 million)

So is John Kasich. ($250K)

So is Scott Walker. (1.1 million)

So was the now-deceased John McCain (the low-ball on the list, only $200K)

Here's a report from the Dallas Morning News - from August of 2017 (!!!!! - NOBODY's picked up on this!!!!) :

Party loyalty is often cited as the reason that GOP leaders have not been more outspoken in their criticism of President Donald Trump and his refusal to condemn Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election. Yet there may be another reason that top Republicans have not been more vocal in their condemnation. Perhaps it's because they have their own links to the Russian oligarchy that they would prefer go unnoticed.
Donald Trump and the political action committees for Mitch McConnell, Marco Rubio, Scott Walker, Lindsey Graham, John Kasich and John McCain accepted $7.35 million in contributions from a Ukrainian-born oligarch who is the business partner of two of Russian president Vladimir Putin's favorite oligarchs and a Russian government bank.
During the 2015-2016 election season, Ukrainian-born billionaire Leonard "Len" Blavatnik contributed $6.35 million to leading Republican candidates and incumbent senators. Mitch McConnell was the top recipient of Blavatnik's donations, collecting $2.5 million for his GOP Senate Leadership Fund under the names of two of Blavatnik's holding companies, Access Industries and AI Altep Holdings, according to Federal Election Commission documents and OpenSecrets.org.

https://www.dallasnews.com/opinion/commentary/2017/08/03/tangled-web-connects-russian-oligarch-money-gop-campaigns

on edit -
Emphasis is mine.

GUYS! NOTE!!!!! THIS IS IMPORTANT, AND YES, I'M SHOUTING!!!

Look at that "dishonor role" of republi-CONS. I'm thinking specifically of John Kasich. JOHN KASICH is on that list, taking dirty money from a dirty Putin-connected/Oleg Deripaska-connected Ukrainian billionaire. JOHN KASICH is gonna run for president someday. Just watch! He's already considered a prime candidate and a somewhat "nice, normal, old-fashioned 'respectable' GOPer." He's already in the top tier for 2024 and onward. Some even have already asked him about running in 2020 to try to primary trump. HE'S DIRTY, TOO!!!! HE'S a wholly-owned subsidiary TOO!!! Don't forget this in the years ahead! We can head him off at the pass with info like this!

"Little Marco" can also be undone by this. He's got lots of presidential ambition. Same thing for Scott Walker.

The media focuses nearly exclusively on the Democrats. It is McConnell who is abrogating his responsibility.

Perhaps we need to start asking the media outlets: " Where is McConnell..."

And, He had two years to give Trump his border wall, and the Republicans did nothing. Now, they are blaming the Democrats. Whenever a member of the Republican party goes on the news and complains that the Dems are at fault, they should be reminded of their part in this.

I am disgusted.

40. Yes! WHERE is McConnell?

And follow it up with that delicious little bon-bon from Steve Schmidt: ďWhere Are The Pesos?Ē

For dessert.

39. This has nothing to do with "cowardice". It's deeply malevolent and cynical.

This fits in with the rethugs pattern over the past 10 years+. McConnell is doing this because the stated aim of the GOP since the Reagan era has been to "reduce the size of government to the point it can be drowned in the bathtub", as Grover Norquist advocated. They don't care about anyone other than the <1%ers - their so-called donor class. Everyone else can go pound sand. They don't give a shit that personnel are working without pay. They don't care about those furloughed, as they'd just as soon they never went back to work. Miss a mortgage payment? Not their problem. The mopes should have saved more. Veterans needing medical care? Who cares? That's their problem. Besides, they shouldn't have allowed themselves to be wounded in that IED trap. Big deal. There are people standing in line to take their places. Next!

42. You're forgetting that you need a 2/3 vote of BOTH Houses of Congress

to overide a presidential veto. That means getting 290 votes in the House, and that is never going to happen.

Mitch may just edge out Flump as the most odious opponent of Democracy -- seems impossible, but he's been at it a lot longer than Diaper Donnie...

51. did he resign in shame? no?

then she didn't "humiliate" him.

he DGAF what she says - he's controlling this shutdown, playing with Trump & the House Dems. he's nowhere near Trump's lapdog - that's an act.

McConnell will rule the Senate, one way or another, until he retires or sheds this mortal coil.

58. Bravo on Maize

She ripped Mitch a new one, as he richly deserves. More Democrats need to do that; Republicans too if they can find the courage.

59. Mitch won't do it because it makes the GOP vote against Trump

He'd rather see people starve than create any space within his party.

Right now, in spite anything he says about the Dems, Mitch knows that Trump alone owns this shutdown. If he sent a bill to the WH, either Trump would give in and sign it or veto it. Signing it would be admitting defeat, so most likely he would veto it.

With a veto it would either be overturned or the veto would stand. If overturned, Trump loses and the Dems would get credit for the win. If the override failed, the GOP as a whole would own the shutdown.

Mitch is protecting what is left of the GOP in the hopes that in 2020 most will blame the mess on Trump alone and not sweep them out across the board and down to the local level.

67. Hey Mitch. Do your job.

I would love to see a journalist point blank ask him, " why do you hate America" and hold his feet to the fire for a straight up answer rather than the usual BS circular answer.

72. What else would you expect from a man (reptile?)...

who publicly bragged that his priority as a U.S. senator was to limit President Obama to one term. Is sabotaging the POTUS what we elect our congress-people to do ? I used to live in eastern Kentucky, unfortunately prior to being able to vote against Mitch. Things were just beginning to swing right at that time. Not really a surprise. Same with W. Va., whose voters used to revere Bobby Kennedy and Jay Rockefeller. They then became "Trump country?" The Democrats have a lot of ground to make in the "upper" South. Hillary truly had plans to revitalize the area that used to be coal country. She just handled it in a very wrong way. (Check her website was mainly IT). Meanwhile Trump lied about "pie in the sky" reopening the mines and steel mills. No one (including in my native PA) was dumb enough to really believe him , but wanted to try the optimism, I guess. What else was really working?
