(19,460 posts)It didn't work out so well for Texans either. Actually, all of America is stolen property and those of you not here originally or descended from those not here originally are simply squatters.

(7,394 posts)were allowed to settle in that area as long as they were loyal to Mexico and abided by Mexican laws. Over time, Anglos started to split away from Mexico and began promising land grants for Americans who would move to Texas. It became nothing other than a land grab.
Eventually they formed a provisional government on Mexican soil.
I just finished "Duel of Eagles" by Jeff Long. It is a novel, but does a great job of laying out the history of the region. Very well researched and includes extensive footnotes.

(2,216 posts)is a Texas slogan that refers to the Battle of Gonzales over a cannon, but it is a big deal to Texans, a stand your ground kind of refusal to be pushed around.

(36,383 posts)"There was a desert wind blowing that night. It was one of those hot dry Santa Anas that come down through the mountain passes and curl your hair and make your nerves jump and your skin itch. On nights like that every booze party ends in a fight. Meek little wives feel the edge of the carving knife and study their husbands' necks. Anything can happen. You can even get a full glass of beer at a cocktail lounge." ― Raymond Chandler, Red Wind: A Collection of Short Stories
Arguably the best opening passage to any hard-boiled mystery fiction, bar none.
Back when I was a kid, we called it the Santana ("Satanás" meaning Satan), and in Northern California, the North Wind (same phenomenon) was sometimes called the Diablo wind (Diablo wind meaning devil wind).

(15,696 posts)... the "volunteer" defenders of the Alamo were hired mercenaries, that Jim Bowie (pronounced BOO-ee) was married to a Mexican woman whose father was the governor of one of the provinces & her family owned a huge chunk of "Texican" land, or that slavery had anything to do with it.
