MSNBC: What is Trump prepared to offer in exchange for a border wall?

LINK

Of course, Trump could try a more conventional approach to negotiating, in which he offered something tangible that Democrats want in exchange for what he wants. In fact, some on the right are concerned the president may eventually do exactly that. The New York Times published a quote the other day that stood out for me:

“I’ve always thought it created a danger that he would trade almost anything in order to get the wall – I think that’s still a potential danger,” said Mark Krikorian, the executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies, a group that argues for less immigration. “I’m still worried about that now.”

From a conservative perspective, those concerns are well grounded. Democrats really don’t want to spend billions of taxpayer dollars on a giant, ineffective border wall, so if Trump were try to come up with an offer designed to entice them, he’d have to propose something that would be (a) enormous; and (b) wildly unpopular among Republicans.

And this got me thinking: what exactly would it take? What would a borderline-desperate president put on the table to sway Democrats?

We offered Wall for Clean DACA in 2017 and he balked. I doubt he has anything else we want.

Given that there aren't enough votes to impeach, Trump and Pence hear that offer and tell Pelosi & Schumer to pound sand. Then what? Federal workers aren't getting paid, which means they will walk off of the job soon. Air Traffic will become very problematic. Federal prisons need to be guarded. The National Parks will become a free-for-all. SNAp won't get funded.

Meanwhile, Trump DGAF, and neither do his enablers.

No way Nancy Pelosi is going to give in to hostage taking. Not happening, and it shouldn't. Give him money this way and he'll just be back for another installment next time we need another vote to keep the government open.

I think this clearly demonstrates we need a law to end the practice of eating ourselves from within with hostage taking government shutdowns so a party or a president can shove legislation down the opposition party's throat when they don't have the necessary majorities to do so. That's a key purpose of our Constitutional Republic form of government in the first place. If Congress and the President can't agree on something, the present level of government funding should be maintained until they do agree. This is nothing but pure Republican bullshit, is hurting many innocent people, and needs to be stopped once and for all.

To me its the most important aspect of all. Instead, a whole lot of botherism that is both false and totally misses the point.

If we had a law to prevent this shutting down of the government, the end result of this would be nobody missing paychecks and no wall money. That thought in itself dismisses the spin about who is taking hostages, for those pushing the false narratives.

Maybe combine it with a reproductive rights bill as well.

Democrats should except no less than a clean daca bill plus medicare for all, roll back GOP tax cuts, and the absolute end of work requirements for snap benefits and health insurance. He would have to get republicans in the senate to pass all of this up front, because we all know his word is worth nothing.

It's the only way he gets his wall and moves a step closer to obtaining the powers of those he so admires, erdogan, xi, putin...

And of course the republicans are facilitating this power grab by refusing to vote in the Senate.

But give us a clean DACA bill, universal (single payer) health care, and roll back those tax cuts, and we'll give you $10B for your stinking wall.

And of course when the inevitable takes place and Trump and Pence are surrounded by 4 impenetrable walls with no one Russian to get them out of jail alive, the new Dem president simply undoes the damage wrought by her predecessor, saying that we are using Trump's "destroy everything Obama created" as our template for change moving forward.

its determined that beefing up physical barriers, as part of a comprehensive border security upgrade, is determined to be a wise thing to do, then ok lets get a cost estimate plus details of a comprehensive plan. But no, you don't get a few billion do do whatever the frig you want with it.

I would like to see dem leaders getting more specific about what needs to be done and should be done ... or by what process this will be determined.

There is no evidence that an expensive new border wall would significantly curb illegal immigration, illegal drugs or anything else. If trump asked for funding for an impartial, objective study on the most effective ways to improve border security, including possibly a wall of some kind, I don't think we'd have a problem with that. But I agree, to hand him $5.7 billion for a wall, with no concrete plans, just because he demands it would be extremely irresponsible. If we give in now, he'll demand even more the next time a government funding bill comes up.
