Today I observe, but not celebrate a special anniversary.

As of today, January 14, 2019, I have been sober for 29 years.

If you're actively abusing substances, the most important day of your recovery is today. The only difference between you and I is that I have a whole bunch of one day at a times under my belt. If I go out and get drunk tomorrow, than I'm back to zero.

If you're afraid of entering into recovery though, please believe that you CAN get here from there.

Hang in there, and thank you for reading.

RESIST!

3. Good for you

I had one of my closest friends commit ďaccidental suicideĒ when he drugged and drank himself to death at 45.
My other best friend should have died but he is now 4 years sober. Iím flying out to see him next week.

21. My condolences for your one friend and my...

.best wishes for your other friend. I do believe that if I hadn't sobered up I'd have boozed myself into a coffin 25 years ago. My wife wouldn't have spit on a drunk me (or maybe she WOULD have).

RESIST!

5. Congratulations on your sobriety, my dear MarianJack! That's a huge milestone.

I cannot even begin to imagine how tough it is to stay sober.

I profoundly respect your strength to have gotten there, and STAYED there.

9. I've had enough people tell me, "It's been a while" that I know exactly how impressive 29 years is.

Heck of an accomplishment on several levels, and the only bad part is that you never, ever, get to rest on those laurels.

23. Well done!

My brother is in a similar situation. He must be more than 40 years now. It's amazing where he started and where he ended up. He's made a huge success of his life and, as far as I know, has never wavered in his determination to stay sober. It really is "one day at a time," but then you look up and realize it's been a month, a year, a decade, a life. You're right . . . you CAN get here from there.

26. I wish my Mom had been succcesful in her fight with alcohol.

Not sure how, but I am able to socially drink without doing what she did to her body. She died at 41. Good for you, you are truly blessed to have gone that long sober. Addiction is horrible, it impacts everyone around you.

27. Thank you so much for sharing your anniversary. It means a lot to me.

The closest person to me throughout my life is an alcoholic. 12 years sober. I am such a better person because of their unbelievable strength. I love all of you who face this battle and notch one day of sobriety in your belt, with tomorrow being a chance for two days.

38. 29 years!?!?!

That is hella-impressive. Something like 1/30 people donít have a relapse, most do relapse.

Iíve made it about 6 months, but usually I get messed up around summer. Lots of bad stuff happened to me in summer and everything puts me back into that time.

Your example gives me something to aspire for!
