by Caleb Ecarma | Jan 15th, 2019, 7:13 pm
MSNBC host Chuck Todd compared President Donald Trumps comments on race to recent remarks from Rep. Steve King (R-IA) defending white supremacy tonight, asking viewers why Republicans are willing to call their own colleague out when they dont condemn similar comments from the president.
I am obsessed with the recent discovery that Iowa Congressman Steve King made a career of making racist statements, Todd said, during Meet the Press Dailys Obsessed segment. Republicans have now stripped him of his committee assignments which effectively neuters him as a congressman. They are basically encouraging him to leave.
After reading the infamous New York Times quote from King on why the white supremacist label is now considered a negative term, Todd went on to read several racist comments from Trump, including his claims that illegal immigrants will pour in and infest our country. The host also noted the presidents concerns about Middle Eastern immigration to Europe and his warning that a savage killer like the Pulse night club shooter could immigrate to the U.S.
Those are not Steve King. That was from President Trump, Todd continued. Why be angry at King? Do the Republicans feel they can be tougher on racism from Steve King after the mid-term wipeout of the suburbs? Do they think they cant criticize a president who is popular among their own primary voters? Do they fear President Trump would punish them by supporting a primary challenger?
You know answers from all of those questions. Yes, yes, and yes, he added. We are all glad to see that people discovered Steve Kings enthusiastic support for white nationalism. We are all wondering what took them so long.
