Lots of good rich people.

Also SCOTUS and other dignitaries should refuse to attend.

(16,646 posts)In fact, McConnell may do this because it would give him alot of control, and yet still have much of the pomp and such. It would be interesting though to figure out how all the cabinet would fit.

(8,614 posts)Of course Mitch will only be too happy to oblige. If he tries that Dems need to refuse to attend giving the same reasons Nancy stated.
Question: Is the Senate chamber large enough to accommodate a joint session?
Delmette2.0
(4,157 posts)There are two choices, in writing or in person at the Speakers request. It's the Speakers House, her invitation, her rules.

(8,614 posts)I know the tradition is to do it in the House chamber but the Idiot doesn't care about tradition.

(52,116 posts)she can't stop mcturtle from inviting donnie to give a speech to the senate.

(52,116 posts)the house would have nothing to do with it.

(8,614 posts)Not the pomp and circumstance of a typical SOTU. Not sure the Idiot would go for that.
Delmette2.0
(4,157 posts)I don't begin to know the rules for SOTU, but someone needs to rein him in and this is a reasonable delay.

(52,116 posts)The constitution only requires Donnie to deliver a report to Congress. A live speech to a joint session is a comparatively recent tradition and not at all a requirement.
He can give a speech to the senate and the transcript will suffice in terms of his official delivery of the report to Congress.
onenote
(42,585 posts)He could satisfy the Constitutional requirement by sending the speech in writing to Pelosi and McConnell and still deliver it in the Senate Chamber at the invite of McConnell. Or he could deliver it from the Oval Office. Or at a partisan rally.
Frankly, I think he'd be overjoyed not to have any Democrats (let alone nearly 300) in the room sitting on their hands during his speech.

(52,116 posts)and so far, the media coverage makes it seem as though it's only going to get worse for donnie as it drags on.
but it is certainly possible that they find a way to have the traditional state of the union speech. pelosi is just making sure that donnie will have to give some sort of concession before it happens. maybe not a complete fix, but something.

(52,116 posts)seeing as how that's the card pelosi is playing with....
if she doesn't agree to letting donnie have his prime time spotlight, then donnie might have to settle for an alternate venue....

Or just Tweet the damn thing, blaming Pelosi and the Democratic for everything at the start of every character limited Tweet.

(14,558 posts)McConnell is that much of a POS, and 45 would get off on it - remember when he held his own press conference and blew off a debate to make a point during the primary?
As someone else noted, I am sure he would rather not have to have Pelosi sitting behind him and a majority of Dems in the House not gushing over him ...
