(268,910 posts)Mueller doesn't have the authority to indict him.
Crimes against the United States will be the big ones but there are many others including election fraud, violations of the emoluments clause, tax evasion, fraud, etc., etc.

Eyeball_Kid
(7,430 posts)against getting an indictment. As of now, there is only an opinion that a president cant. But never before has a president committed felonies to get elected. So this is new legal territory. That DOJ opinion presumes the investigation of crimes far less severe than conspiring with an adversary to win an election. This isnt a common crime were dealing with. Its the most severe of all federal felonies.

(3,255 posts)He actually destroyed the evidence when he was acting head of the FBI and it took about the time the Dolt has in office to uncover it. Of course he was never charged with anything because..............? I could easily see them bring in Barr to run out the clock because they know in money Washington nobody gives a shit when you're gone. Nixon wasn't crazy enough not to resign but the Dolt is pure nuts. The argument that Barr will use is impeachment is the only remedy and the hand picked Supremes will back him up and the Senate won't be able to get the votes. Meanwhile Barr will do what he did for the Iran Contra crooks and arrange mass pardons. By the time they are done they will have done a job on Washington that will take 20 years to fix. The Civil Service is already a casuality. How long would anyone with any abilities work for an employer who forces them to get paid? The only insurance we have is if the Democrats
unearth defintive proof of felonies. I know Mueller has a huge fan base, but he is a Republican after all just like Gray who had a good record.
malaise
(268,910 posts)and Dems already have enough proof. He's going down. Of course he may jump first as reality is catching up with him.

(12,344 posts)There are other ways for someone to get an indictment before a court, but they are long shot and highly unusual moves. Still, I am sure someone will try it.

(268,910 posts)Not sure the Senate will do its job. I think New York will get him on some crimes and the Feds and courts will also get him.

(24,365 posts)but the second he steps foot on the tarmac in New York, he will either be handed a subpoena or get cuffed.
That's how I see it playing out.
Mueller is no dummy. He has sent plenty to the SDNY. I'm betting they have enough on him to put him away for life.

(37,748 posts)I hope he will. I'd love to see a picture of trump in orange jumpsuit with the caption, "I don't care. Do you?" but the past two and half years of worldwide idiocy (Brexit, Putin's foreign invasions going without consequence, etc.) has me stumped as to what the next two years hold. Right now, I'm just too short-sighted to see beyond the next crisis.
My fingers crossed and my mouth closed. Until...

(18,122 posts)You're right, he might be impeached, but I doubt the Senate will convict him.
The problem is that there are different rules for the rich and powerful. I see the next president pardoning him just to "heal" the country (like Ford did with Nixon). Even though he is as guilty as sin, he'll escape any prosecution. My guess is that he'll be voted out in 2020 and will be damaged goods for most of America. The value of his brand will decrease, but he will continue to be a cult leader to his followers.
Trumpism (authoritarian, racism, nationalism, jingoism) will continue for a while longer but will eventually run its course.

(18,122 posts)I still think Obama made a mistake not going after Bush and Cheney for their crimes against humanity. As long as a president knows that he or she can get away with it, they'll keep pushing the boundary.

(5,810 posts)And most of us sure do hope he is.....there are experts in DC researching it. You can bet they are looking at every avenue to put his sorry ass away until the grim reaper hauls him away. He deserves to spend the rest of his days behind bars and if there is any justice that will be his fate.
The evidence seems to piling up into a mountain every day.
I worry (sometimes) that his fall back plan is to flee to another country (and take the family members he likes) so he is in exile. But I try not to think that way because it just pisses me off to think about him getting away with what he has done to this country!

(3,131 posts)State attorney generals such as Latitia James in NY are a wild card. She wont want to mess up Muellers investigation but getting an indictment would make history.
I think Mueller will find a way around the DoJ opinion on indicting presidents maybe by going through a state, but if it goes through impeachment first the indictment might wait. Maybe until he is out of office.
The other wild card is he is an obese old man under high stress whose favorite meal is a big mac with a filet of fish chaser.
Given enough time I agree that it is likely some state AG doesnt indict him on one of the easier fraud, reporting or perjury charges. I hope we get him on at least some espionage type charge soon.
