Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region Forums(NOT an endorsement) Of the currently announced 2020 candidates I think Harris is the frontrunner.
I think she has the least controversy. She is younger and new to the national stage. She has impeccable credentials. She has an image as a non nonsense fighter.
I know some on the left see her as problematic due to her time as a prosecutor but I think that will serve her well in the larger citizenry.
This can change, but I think this is the case today.
Again ====> NOT an endorsement; just an observation and opinion.

(54,349 posts)For the next five minutes, anyway.
A friend of mine (pre my DU days) was once considered the front runner for the Democratic nomination, had his picture on the covers of Time and Newsweek the same week. It fizzled, needless to say.

Secretariat?

(54,349 posts)Although Secretariat was probably better qualified than half the Republicans running 3 years ago, including the one that won.

(54,349 posts)Every two days some new hero announces, and suddenly people pop up planning to attend the inauguration.
I'm just not interested. Close to two years before an election is not a time to start celebrating the nominee. THAT hasn't changed, even though it's different every time. Howard was a singular phenomenon in his day. It sure as hell didn't get him the nomination, although I still think he would have been a fabulous president.
This time, it looks like we'll have ten or more people announcing. Each one gets the appropriate publicity. Fine and dandy. What I find weird is people immediately jumping on bandwagons with near-fanatical enthusiasm before we even know what all our choices will be. Everyone is a big deal when they announce. I'm interested in who is a big deal 18 months from now. That could very well end up being someone who hasn't yet made headlines (also fine and dandy).
It never works out exactly the same way twice in a row. Certain fundamentals, however, are immutable, and one of them is that more people will fizzle out early than will still be in this by March of next year. ALL candidates will have vulnerabilities. They had better be ready for their opponents to try to exploit them, because they will.

(27,995 posts)Who do you think is a front runner at this moment?
And Welcome to DU!
I don't think there's a frontrunner at this time, nor should there be. I don't see why we should boast having the most diverse pool of candidates ever, only to undermine that diversity by declaring 'frontrunners'.

It really is way too early to worry about much of it and certainly way too early to worry about a front runner.

(67,790 posts)This was an opinion based on a snapshot in time.
I won't make my own decision until very close to the end. But here on DU we tend to take any mention with any positivity as an endorsement and any criticism, no matter how mild, as an attack.

(42,862 posts)She's a serious contender, and even though she's not likely to be the nominee... she DOES benefit the party with her strength and intelligence and her no-nonsense demeanor.
The party also benefits when she is able to divert attention away from the eventual "also rans" like Gillibrand and whats-her-name from Hawaii. (There! You see? I can't even remember her name... she's NOT the kind of candidate who can be a winner in national politics.)

(31,109 posts)against Harris, here is what you said:
I remember in a past election the same stuff about someone else and look where that got us
I know some on the left see her as problematic due to her being not aggressive enough and fill in the blank issue but I think that will serve her well in the larger citizenry.
This is how it happens. Already. We need to reject this

(6,916 posts)I think she is eloquent on the need for justice-seeking prosecutors. (But I wouldnt want another prosecton tbr SCOTUS when we pack it to 15 seats. I want another few Thurgood Marshalls.)

(6,916 posts)And Dem candidate who wants to effect change HAS GOT TO have an aggressive policy on both.
And an ability to make that policy happen.
I want a POLICY candidate who has plans and experience at getting them through Congress.

(19,193 posts)She's just announced and getting all her ducks in a row will take a few weeks, at least. Could you cut her, and anyone else in the same position, some slack? The election is a year and a half off. No one is going to have an iron clad policy position at this point in time.

(19,193 posts)she's the person who gives me the most hope and appears to be a genuine fighter. We need someone who's not going to be intimidated by the orange pus sac currently holding office, and I don't think anyone can intimidate Ms. Harris.
I like her..........A LOT!

(8,322 posts)Warren won last week.
I think that in a #BlackLivesMatter time, her record as an LA prosecutor and as Cali AG is -- contrary to your opinion -- not something that will serve her well upon closer scrutiny. I find her credentials a bit thin, far from impeccable. Her announcement on MLK Day seemed a bit of a pander to the African American caucus. But irrespective of our opinions, she might very well be one of the last left standing this time next year (or 13 or 14 months from now, to be more accurate).
Last week Liz Warren got all the love; this is Kamala's week. Next week? Who can tell?
