McConnell is going to take up the House Bill

One vote on Trumps bill, one on House bill.

I think it's a good idea.

It's likely naive of me to think the Republican Senators will vote Yes on a clean bill to fund the government.... But I have faith that they will.

You can't make people go months without income.

Washington (CNN) — The Senate will take two key votes on Thursday on competing proposals aimed at ending the ongoing government shutdown -- one backed by Republicans and the other backed by Democrats and both likely to fail.

One of the votes will be on a proposal backed by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to fund President Donald Trump's border wall and reopen shuttered parts of the government. That legislation is in line with an offer the President proposed over the weekend offering temporary protections for some immigrants in exchange for $5.7 billion for a border wall -- and which Democrats swiftly rejected as they hold firm in insisting that the government should be reopened before lawmakers proceed to a debate on border security.

The other vote will be on House-passed legislation backed by Democrats to reopen the government without providing new funding for the wall.

2. What happens next?

Here are the possibilities:

> House bill passes but Trump bill fails

> Trump bill passes but House bill fails

> Both bills pass!

> Both bills fail!

Anyone have opinions on what happens after each of the above possibilities?

19. My question is which bill goes *first*?

If McConnell puts up Trump's first and it passes, will the House bill be considered?

I wouldn't put it past the evil old turtle.

4. It is good to get Republicans on the record.

I don't think it will pass, needing 60 votes, but it is a good start.

And if Dem Senators behave, the House bill should get more votes than Trump's bill.

5. What's he got up his sleeve?

I don't, for a minute, think he's caving. He's got some other wicked plan at hand. There must be some sort of Senate rules or some esoteric doctrine he's going to pull out to get Trump's way.

16. Yes, and Republicans who voted for it then and not now

will be exposed as voting to keep federal workers from returning to work. It will give them each personal accountability for the hostage taking.

23. Perhaps, but exposure is never a bad thing, and I will be working

to get rid of one who is up for reelection in North Carolina in 2020, if he votes against it, Mr Thom Tillis.

7. When/if the House bill fails

we will have an official tally of every Republican Senator who voted to continue keeping Federal workers without their paychecks. This can then be hung around their necks in their re-election campaigns.

8. They will pass both bills. Gov't will reopen until feb 8. Donnie will use sotu address to blame dems

That's what this is all about.

Donnie will claim credit for ending the shutdown and then blame democrats for creating the second shutdown, even though it's all the same b.s.

He just wants to have his pomp and circumstance for his big speech. And reframe the "debate"

9. Interesting take

If anything Trump is good at talking to his (in my opinion) less than 30% base.

Passing both is a smart move.

18. I tend to agree

This is all about the SOTU address and him being able to spew his hate, fear, and stupidity to the whole nation, while blaming the Democrats for everything. I am not sure he will be able pin it on the Democrats, but it will inflate his sick warped ego, and after all the only one that maters is "him"!

There’s more serious work than speeches and pageantry.

11. Moscow Mitch is getting raked over the coals....

...doing nothing is worse than doing something. So he's throwing everything out there, what passes, passes. What doesn't, doesn't. But he's trying to wash his hands of this...despite the fact, he's responsible for delaying several years of legislation...even when he agreed with it because a black guy in office might get credit.

He knows the border wall is dead. But if the government getting funded by the Senate goes through, then its on Trump to veto. If the Senate overrides or not, the pressure is off of him.

...and then, essentially, say “well, now that we’ve proven there’s no way you’re going to reopen government without fully funding the wall, let’s negotiate (everything except that).”
