...do we really want to support MAGA Man's grab of Venezuelas oil, gas and gold?

" Political tensions continue in Venezuela "
.
" In a united and seemingly coordinated front, the U.S., Canada and some Latin American and European countries announced that they supported Guaidos claim that the constitution makes him interim president.
But Russia, China, Iran, Syria, Cuba and Turkey have voiced their backing for Maduros government.
President Donald Trump promised to use the full weight of U.S. economic and diplomatic power to push for the restoration of Venezuelas democracy. The people of Venezuela have courageously spoken out against Maduro and his regime and demanded freedom and the rule of law, he said in a statement. "
" Chinas Foreign Ministry called on the United States to stay out of the crisis, while Russias deputy foreign minister warned the U.S. against any military intervention in Venezuela. "
..
" The socialist leader, who so far has been backed by the military, as well as the government-packed courts and a constituent assembly, recalled the long history of heavy-handed U.S. interventions in Latin America during the Cold War as he asked his allies for support.
Dont trust the gringos, he thundered to a crowd of red-shirted supporters gathered at the presidential palace. They dont have friends or loyalties. They only have interests, the nerve and the ambition to take Venezuelas oil, gas and gold. "

(21,624 posts)Bush, you'll recall, gave serious intelligence and monetary support (we'll never know how many millions) to overthrowing Hugo Chávez in April 2002.
The designated "interim" president, Pedro Carmona, like Juan Guaidó, inaugurated himself - and even managed to issue a litany of decrees (mostly to undo Chávez-era laws).
But lacking wider military support, the coup collapsed the next day, leaving Dubya with Texas-sized egg on his face - and Chávez emboldened.
Not to be outdone, Cheeto just made the very same mistake - though he probably suspected it would fail, and pimped Dense Pence to put his face to this fiasco instead of his.

Any "weak," democratic government will likely continue to be destabilized by greedy interests at home and abroad who want control of all that oil.
