Why a 3 week CR instead of just ending the farce entirely?
The only reasons I can think of:
1. Trump and the GOP still feel they can somehow turn the situation around in that time and still "win" and get The Wall or other concessions out of the Democrats
2. Trump and the GOP do in fact realize they have completely lost on this, there is no win to be had, but somehow feel they can bury the final capitulation further down in the headlines and diminish the embarrassment and political cost of caving completely all at once
3. The LaGuardia and air travel situation caused their house of cards to collapse so abruptly that they were at a loss for an appropriate face saving narrative to spin, they needed a little extra time to come up with one.
I don't see how it would be in any way possible to hold the thread of shutting down the government again in three weeks as any kind of credible threat, I can't imagine the GOP Senate or Mitch would have any stomach for that. That would be like saying "the hostages can visit their families for three weeks but then they must return to have us place the gun to their heads again". Nonstarter. I'd think the Senate would overrride a veto before they'd allow that to happen again. Especially since the air traffic controllers know they can end it immediately by shutting down U.S. air travel.
Anything else I'm not seeing?
