T proposing Bible study classes in public schools

This post is not about religion -- just about the proposal.

Granted the proposal would make the classes optional, but a few things jumped out at me.

One, the concept of separation of church and state. Wouldn't those classes begin to cross the line?

Two, the Bible is a Chistian text and there are a number of versions of it. Agreeing on a version would be interesting to say the least.

Three, the classes would supposedly study the Bible for its historical influence, not as a religious text. That would call for very specialized, and very objective, teachers.

Four (along with two), this would ignore the historical influence of other religious texts.

Five, given all the above (and in this contentious period), would those classes result in chaos?

Six, and going back to one, is this the start of establishing a "state religion?"

Seven, would six violate the freedom of religion concept?

I know what my thoughts on the above are. What are yours?

2. I'm unclear what the purpose of these classes is.

There is little need to know the bible in this day and age, except in relation to the study of European literature/art. Thus, shouldn't the study of biblical stories really be contained in an English Lit course?

On the other hand, a class on the Koran/Islam would actually be useful to students who want to make more sense of international news. That might make conservative heads spin, though.

3. At my University I took a course titled "the Supreme Court and Religion"

which was an historical look at decisions of the SCOTUS over the years in regard to religion.

I was dabbling in pre-law and I took every law course open to me with actually enrolling in the law school.

This course was fine... it did not "study the bible" nor did it comment about any particular religion.

I'm about as agnostic leaning toward atheist as they come.

At the university level... this sort of course work is fine I think. High school and below is another matter. Bible study should be left to the church and those who feel a need to attend such things... it has no place at a publicly funded school. It is enough to teach history (which is replete with examples of religion caused events) and social studies, etc.

4. The only WALL I support is that between Church and State........

Perhaps that is why there are PRIVATE scools whose ciriculum is based on Scripture and the Bible, that espouses a particular brand of Christianity. I have no problem helping with funding for books and materials for Teachers regarding State and Federal Requirements for Math, Sciences, etc. for mandated Graduation standards. But not for subsidizing tuitions.

Both my children went to Catholic schools. One graduated from, the other, Public school.

6. What a cynical move by 45, deliberately throwing a phony bone to his deluded fundie base.

And it’s pretty obvious that 45 isn’t interested about participating in any religion, ever. He’s just pandering like a mthfckr, but the rubes love him, since he’s supposed to help usher in the End Times, from which the deluded believe they will be rescued by a rapture up into the heavens.
