Sun Feb 3, 2019, 01:25 PM
Feb 2019

If you like it black, the more acidic Central and South American coffees are your best bet. If, like me you prefer a more hot chocolate like coffee with cream and sugar then low acid Indonesian coffees like Sumatran are the way to go. There, the beans are de-pulped mechanically which tends to leave a bit of the cherry-like fruit attached to the beans, giving them a funky taste some people like myself just love.

Of course, about the most expensive coffee produced grows in the Blue Mountains of Jamaica. Delicate and floral.

Prior to the mid to late 80's, anyone who had spent time in Europe noticed that the coffee and beer tasted much better than our American versions. So much so that the craft brewing scene and Starbucks sprung to life.

Sun Feb 3, 2019, 04:03 AM
Feb 2019

I can get a large coffee (cup is recyclable) at Speedway or Delta Sonic - espresso blend is my fave - with all sorts of embellishments available, for $1.65. A Starbucks large, or venti, or whatever they call it, would be around $5-6. Of course I'm missing out on the special green cup with my name misspelled on it, and the foam on the top with the cute swirls and stuff. This coffee is served by a "barista", a name someone invented in 1982 for "someone who serves coffee". What I want is the caffeine. I like the taste of coffee, maybe a little cream or whole milk, but no sugar or flavorings. If I want to taste hazel nuts I'll buy some hazel nuts. If I want caramel I'll buy caramel. But really all I want is the caffeine, so I'm able to keep up with my grandchildren for a few hours.

I'm sure some people think that Starbucks is superior coffee, served in a pleasant setting (if you're white), with all sorts of bells and whistles available to make your coffee drinking "experience" a memorable one. I imagine they believe they're getting good value for their money as well. What I want is the caffeine and the taste of coffee, and not having to spend a small fortune to get it. I guess I'm just a little old fashioned that way, and frugal to boot.

To each his/her own.

I knew Starbucks "coffee" is ridiculously expensive, and it could very well cost $15 in my mind. I know there are people who would probably pay that much just to be hip. Like the $5 milkshake in "Pulp Fiction". A $5 milkshake is a bargain in most places now. A $15 10oz.cup of coffee is a bit more than I'm willing to pay though.

It is also a fashion statement and a status symbol.

Welcome to Starbucks were a barista will fill out your order then scream out your name to announce to the world that you are not only keeping up with the Jones,.. but to prove it - you are willing to pay the outrageous price of $15/cup of coffee.

For goodness sake's the Jones really can't afford that degree of ostentatious consumption,.. their disposable income can not support such extravagances and wasteful spendings as that.

A few weeks back a group of us had a quick lunch at Wendy's - no one in the group could drink the coffee it was too bitter and too strong.

The type of coffee that is not refreshing and a pleasant mid day boost,.. but rather the type of cup of coffee that upsets your stomach and haunts you throughout the rest of the day.

To each their own. We are all wired a little differently. Thank goodness we are not cookie cutter operation identical to one another.

Life would then be so BORING.

Funny Dunkin story:
In Boston on biz but on a Sunday
Get in car to drive to Springfield to see an old friend.
Stop at DD for a coffee and young lady asks "Regular?". I say yes.
I take a sip and it's got 3 teaspoons of sugar and is a quarter creamer.
I go back and say " I asked for regular. ". She says " That is regular."
Suddenly it dawns on me; I'm in Boston.
She just took it back and gave me one black!

Back when they were company-owned. Summer job while in college. We were told to put in lots of cream and sugar if people asked for “regular”. Back then we used real cream. Unfortunately I got to like the lots-of-cream part.

89. One Last Coffee Story
Sun Feb 3, 2019, 12:51 PM
Feb 2019

The first of my many trips to Northern England I was surprised how common coffee was.
But, it was all instant. Even in restaurants, they'd give a cup of hot water and a packet of crystals.
I'm remembering there is a coffee bar at the Manchester airport so, looking forward to brewed coffee.
I order American coffee and they made it by taking a demitasse of espresso and diluting it with hot water!
Boy, was I disappointed!
After that, I had a Keurig sent over there, bought one of reusable pods, and took my own ground coffee.

They have installed these machines in many of their travel centers that grind beans for each cup.

They look like this;

They have really expanded their coffee and tea selections from the way it used to be. Gone is the giant, 5 gallon coffee urn of the old days. anywhere from 6 to 10 different styles and brews is now on hand at most of these facilities.

The downside? This company has been involved in numerous lawsuits over the last few years alleging they discriminated against certain firms with a fuel price discount.

But politics aside, they have a decent cuppa!

And yes, they are good. I also like wawa and 7-11. I drink my coffee black, no sugar so it's pretty easy to drive right past the Starburns to get to any of those depending which way i'm going.

But those are only if i'm out of coffee at home. I drink 1 20oz cup a day and that's all I get so I am a little picky.

It's mind boggling to me that the boycott ignores the fact Schultz isn't really involved with Starbucks anymore. Yes he has stocks but so do many others. Not to mention the rank and file workers will suffer.

from my mom and pop coffee shop, which is also where I (when I'm going in that direction) get coffee to go. My other go-to is Whole Foods. Their coffee is excellent. Strong but not charred. McDonald's coffee, if fresh, is good in a pinch and only a buck. Wawa I've heard is GOP but I don't like their coffee and 7-11 is right up there with gas station coffee....

Schultz owns 2% of the stock. The other 98% are not at fault. And the countless workers and partners are not to blame. Does the laid off employee deserve losing the job?

Sun Feb 3, 2019, 03:56 PM
Feb 2019

That may be a small percentage given how huge of a company Starbucks is, but it's far from a small amount and a boycott will definitely hurt him.

"Howard Schultz, Founder and Former Chief Executive
Howard Schultz is the founder, former chief executive officer (CEO), and single-largest shareholder of Starbucks. Schultz holds 33 million shares directly and 1.7 million shares indirectly through trusts as of Jun. 26, 2018. Schultz joined the Starbucks Coffee Company as the director of retail and marketing in 1982. In 1983, Schultz traveled to Italy and became enchanted with the tradition of Italian coffee roasting. He briefly left Starbucks to form his own coffee company, called Il Giornale Coffee Company, but returned to Starbucks in August 1987 — this time with a team of investors. At that point, Schultz purchased all of Starbucks Coffee Company's assets and became the company's chief executive officer. At the end of 2016, Schultz announced that he would be turning over the CEO role to Kevin Johnson. According to Schultz's most recent filing with the SEC on June 26, 2018, Schultz owns 33 million shares of Starbucks directly and another 1.7 million shares indirectly through trusts."

I don't know the Starbucks language for "medium cup, black, hot", but that's what I'm drinking.

I'll have to switch to decaf before joining the DU Lounge Minute-by-minute Superbowl thread. It should be better than actually watching the game.

Gas station? Casey's.
Midsize chain for frou-frou on the way to a competition? Scooters.
When I actually have time to sit? Two local coffee shops that buy their beans from The Roasterie.

At home (majority of the time)? Either 8 O'Clock or Community.

I work graves and usually consume it black and by the pot. (Except right now, since I'm on work comp for a broken ankle and my ortho said I should slow down.)

It's hard to beat the large cappuccino at the Cafe (only one "f," not a typo) Perfetto in the center of town for €3.50.

Otherwise, my wife makes a mean espresso right here at home. It's so strong, it could jumpstart a corpse.

But coffee is mostly a spectator sport for me anyway, as I prefer tea.
