(7,616 posts)If you like it black, the more acidic Central and South American coffees are your best bet. If, like me you prefer a more hot chocolate like coffee with cream and sugar then low acid Indonesian coffees like Sumatran are the way to go. There, the beans are de-pulped mechanically which tends to leave a bit of the cherry-like fruit attached to the beans, giving them a funky taste some people like myself just love.
Of course, about the most expensive coffee produced grows in the Blue Mountains of Jamaica. Delicate and floral.
Prior to the mid to late 80's, anyone who had spent time in Europe noticed that the coffee and beer tasted much better than our American versions. So much so that the craft brewing scene and Starbucks sprung to life.

(19,187 posts)I can get a large coffee (cup is recyclable) at Speedway or Delta Sonic - espresso blend is my fave - with all sorts of embellishments available, for $1.65. A Starbucks large, or venti, or whatever they call it, would be around $5-6. Of course I'm missing out on the special green cup with my name misspelled on it, and the foam on the top with the cute swirls and stuff. This coffee is served by a "barista", a name someone invented in 1982 for "someone who serves coffee". What I want is the caffeine. I like the taste of coffee, maybe a little cream or whole milk, but no sugar or flavorings. If I want to taste hazel nuts I'll buy some hazel nuts. If I want caramel I'll buy caramel. But really all I want is the caffeine, so I'm able to keep up with my grandchildren for a few hours.
I'm sure some people think that Starbucks is superior coffee, served in a pleasant setting (if you're white), with all sorts of bells and whistles available to make your coffee drinking "experience" a memorable one. I imagine they believe they're getting good value for their money as well. What I want is the caffeine and the taste of coffee, and not having to spend a small fortune to get it. I guess I'm just a little old fashioned that way, and frugal to boot.
To each his/her own.
Freddie
(9,257 posts)Has a Starbucks right at the entrance. The smell is absolutely divine, so I get drawn in. But the coffee tastes burnt. Like you, I dont want fou-fou coffee drinks or (yuk!) flavored coffee, just a cup with cream and sugar. For that, Wawa is superior IMO.

(19,187 posts)I knew Starbucks "coffee" is ridiculously expensive, and it could very well cost $15 in my mind. I know there are people who would probably pay that much just to be hip. Like the $5 milkshake in "Pulp Fiction". A $5 milkshake is a bargain in most places now. A $15 10oz.cup of coffee is a bit more than I'm willing to pay though.
magicarpet
(14,121 posts)A cup of coffee isn't just a cup of coffee,..
It is also a fashion statement and a status symbol.
Welcome to Starbucks were a barista will fill out your order then scream out your name to announce to the world that you are not only keeping up with the Jones,.. but to prove it - you are willing to pay the outrageous price of $15/cup of coffee.
For goodness sake's the Jones really can't afford that degree of ostentatious consumption,.. their disposable income can not support such extravagances and wasteful spendings as that.

(14,121 posts)A few weeks back a group of us had a quick lunch at Wendy's - no one in the group could drink the coffee it was too bitter and too strong.
The type of coffee that is not refreshing and a pleasant mid day boost,.. but rather the type of cup of coffee that upsets your stomach and haunts you throughout the rest of the day.
To each their own. We are all wired a little differently. Thank goodness we are not cookie cutter operation identical to one another.

Ask them to make a fresh pot. Our local Wendys is a senior citizen hang out and I hear them request fresh pots all the time. They also ask various levels of hot water with the coffee. The first time I heard it my friend explained it's because as it sits it becomes bitter. She said the most common is an inch of hot water and the rest coffee.

(14,121 posts)I just signed up for Social Security Retirement so I'm coming to terms with the fact I too am an old crusty, wrinkled, old geezer too.
Yes the coffee is likely burnt, stale, and old.
Seems management should be on top of that. Next time I may mention it to someone who works behind the ordering counter. Maybe they will be kind enough to trash the old urn of coffee and start a fresh one.
xmas74
(29,671 posts)In a place like that during lunch they usually aren't paying attention to coffee unless they need it. They're rushing around filling orders and it gets overlooked.
If you ask for a fresh pot and are willing to wait they probably wouldn't have a problem with making it. Our Wendys has 25 cent drinks with unlimited refills in store for senior citizens so they hang out all morning in the dining room and play cards.

In Boston on biz but on a Sunday
Get in car to drive to Springfield to see an old friend.
Stop at DD for a coffee and young lady asks "Regular?". I say yes.
I take a sip and it's got 3 teaspoons of sugar and is a quarter creamer.
I go back and say " I asked for regular. ". She says " That is regular."
Suddenly it dawns on me; I'm in Boston.
She just took it back and gave me one black!

(64,857 posts)The first of my many trips to Northern England I was surprised how common coffee was.
But, it was all instant. Even in restaurants, they'd give a cup of hot water and a packet of crystals.
I'm remembering there is a coffee bar at the Manchester airport so, looking forward to brewed coffee.
I order American coffee and they made it by taking a demitasse of espresso and diluting it with hot water!
Boy, was I disappointed!

(24,362 posts)They have installed these machines in many of their travel centers that grind beans for each cup.
They look like this;
They have really expanded their coffee and tea selections from the way it used to be. Gone is the giant, 5 gallon coffee urn of the old days. anywhere from 6 to 10 different styles and brews is now on hand at most of these facilities.
The downside? This company has been involved in numerous lawsuits over the last few years alleging they discriminated against certain firms with a fuel price discount.
But politics aside, they have a decent cuppa!

(12,132 posts)And yes, they are good. I also like wawa and 7-11. I drink my coffee black, no sugar so it's pretty easy to drive right past the Starburns to get to any of those depending which way i'm going.

"Howard Schultz, Founder and Former Chief Executive
Howard Schultz is the founder, former chief executive officer (CEO), and single-largest shareholder of Starbucks. Schultz holds 33 million shares directly and 1.7 million shares indirectly through trusts as of Jun. 26, 2018. Schultz joined the Starbucks Coffee Company as the director of retail and marketing in 1982. In 1983, Schultz traveled to Italy and became enchanted with the tradition of Italian coffee roasting. He briefly left Starbucks to form his own coffee company, called Il Giornale Coffee Company, but returned to Starbucks in August 1987 this time with a team of investors. At that point, Schultz purchased all of Starbucks Coffee Company's assets and became the company's chief executive officer. At the end of 2016, Schultz announced that he would be turning over the CEO role to Kevin Johnson. According to Schultz's most recent filing with the SEC on June 26, 2018, Schultz owns 33 million shares of Starbucks directly and another 1.7 million shares indirectly through trusts."
