Siena Presidential Expert Poll: Washington top president, FDR second; Trump enters survey at 42nd
February 13, 2019
For the sixth time since its inception in 1982, the Siena College Research Institutes (SCRI) Survey of U.S. Presidents finds that experts rank Franklin D. Roosevelt, Teddy Roosevelt, Abe Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson and George Washington as the United States top five chief executives. The 157 participating presidential scholars for the first time name Washington as number one with FDR second, Lincoln third, Teddy Roosevelt fourth and Jefferson fifth. Donald Trump enters the survey as the 42nd rated president, and he joins Andrew Johnson, James Buchanan, Warren Harding and Franklin Pierce in the bottom five. CONT.

At least Johnson got us Alaska, which Trump might give back to Putin.

(3,396 posts)There was a string of ten presidents that included Lincoln, one decent president in Polk, and of the other eight, the best was maybe U.S. Jackson. Even if there were things you disliked about Lincoln, view him in context.
Funny, two of the worst came right before and after Obama, as well.

(1,602 posts)Harding was not a good president, but for the most part his legacy came about because of the Teapot Dome scandal, and his inability to punish those responsible.
Andrew Johnson had the opportunity to positively rebuild the country after the war, but he was both corrupt and about as racist as they came (granted, Lincoln was no angel there, but he successfully led the country through its darkest hours).
Ultimately what will keep Trump in the basement is the degree of corruption that he BROUGHT to the White House, and his ties to multiple foreign powers that have continued the corruption within the White House. He's incompetent as well, but he's far from the first in that area.

(16,646 posts)Differentiating between 45 people on a scale from one to 5 isn't good. 1 - 20 would be a bit better. And equal weighting of 20 categories doesn't make much sense either since some characteristics would be more important than others, especially at various historical periods.
Grant is rated way too high, as is Nixon. I also never though Lincoln should be anywhere near the top 5. And how does one put Kennedy above Obama?

(52,155 posts)he shouldn't have been loyal too but he also had some great qualities. He passed civil rights legislation that had it been permitted to stand would have given all citizens the rights that it took Johnson to deliver.

Also of note: at the bottom of that link, there are 4 categories for "moved the country in the right or wrong direction", for the presidents since 1970. They're mixed up to GHW Bush; then Clinton and Obama get net positive scores in all 4 categories, and Dubya and the Orange Gibbon get net negative scores in all 4. Horrendously negative in Trump's case.

(3,396 posts)Although Buchanan was a Northerner, he mostly allied with the South on slavery issues, including the infamous Dred Scott decision. His actions made the Civil War much worse. Johnson tried to roll back any civil rights black people had gained under Lincoln. He barely survived impeachement.
