Why shouldn't he run?

(18,186 posts)Democratic representative Conyers introduced it in every session up to and including the 115th Congress. (It was re-introduced in this session as well.) Even BS was a co-sponsor (although not an original) of Conyers's ground-breaking legislation in 2002.
It's time to stop perpetuating false narratives.
Universal coverage has been a core Democratic Party value since 1992.
Democrats have introduced Medicare for All legislation (with robust co-sponsorship and support) in every session of Congress for the past 17 years.

lapucelle
(18,186 posts)It's amazing how many people say "nobody knew about it" when they really mean "I didn't know about it".
Present company exclused, of course.
irresistable
(989 posts)Which means that it would NEVER happen.
And many centrist Democrats still are opposed to it.
Bernie POPULARIZED it. Now we are having a conversation about it.
lapucelle
(18,186 posts)and non-Democrats may not have been.
irresistable
(989 posts)Which is why it was not being broadly discussed.
lapucelle
(18,186 posts)(although perhaps not on facebook and reddit).
"People I know didn't know about it, therefore it didn't exist" is not a cogent argument.
irresistable
(989 posts)After Bernie, multiple Democrats have signed on to Medicare for all.
lapucelle
(18,186 posts)It's a pity that politicians who stubbornly wanted it all "NOW, NOW, NOW" failed to support Democratic proposals back in 1993-1994.
We probably would have had universal coverage through a single payer system by now, just like we have a $15 an hour minimum wage and free state university tuition here in NYS under "incrementalist" Democratic governor Andrew Cuomo.
irresistable
(989 posts)That is why we need people like Bernie and AOC to push the boundaries with a loud voice. Less bold politicians will then come on board.
lapucelle
(18,186 posts)The bill was drafted in 2015 and Cuomo signed the legislation in April 2016. There was a three year phase-in period that was completed in NYC in 2018.
Damn those incrementalists!
And, even if that were not true, post hoc ergo propter hoc is fallacious reasoning at its most egregious. It appears that it takes actual hard work, negotiation, and compromise to actually get the big things done.
irresistable
(989 posts)and rising in the polls. Cuomo proposed it in Sept 2015.
Bernie ran on Medicare for all, and now many Democrats are on board.
I realize that you cannot bear to give Bernie credit for his leadership on this issue.
lapucelle
(18,186 posts)he wrote and passed?
According to you, BS had a 6 month head start on Democrat Andrew Cuomo. Cuomo succeeded where others either failed or talked a lot and did nothing.
I like leaders who work hard and actually get things done.
irresistable
(989 posts)Ask Jeff Bezos.
lapucelle
(18,186 posts)That's why we need savvy, serious experts working on policy, sitting at the negotiating table, and actually fighting for workers rather than those easily played and overly concerned with generating good publicity for their personal brand rather than a good deal for labor.
irresistable
(989 posts)...and part-timers who don't have benefits have a much higher salary.
Where I live, part timers who don't have benefits went from 11.50 to 15.00 per hour.
Other employers in my area have been forced to raise wages in order to compete.
lapucelle
(18,186 posts)That's like saying, "Well, the people of Vermont still have a good minimum wage" even though it's not $15 an hour, and the governor who vetoed a raise was re-elected in November.
In NYS, our Democratic governor actually got it done, despite a divided legislature and the ridiculous accusations of "incrementalism".
irresistable
(989 posts)because of the competition.
The people who were complaining at Amazon did so because the new people were getting more, not because they were getting less.
lapucelle
(18,186 posts)because the new people were getting more, not because they were getting less" doesn't make any sense.
I have a problem with anyone who foments distrust of and disdain for a system of commerce while still maximizing their own personal profits by advertising, marketing, and distributing their products using that system.
I have neither respect nor trust for career politicians who choose self interest over principle, yet expect others to walk the walk.
irresistable
(989 posts)I know multiple people who work at Amazon.
The people that I know who have worked there a while started at 10hr and had worked their way up to 12hr and then suddenly everyone is getting 15. Some, not all, resent that.
I also know people who just started there who love it. Amazon is constantly expanding and they promote from within.
"I have a problem with anyone who foments distrust of and disdain for a system of commerce while still maximizing their own personal profits by advertising, marketing, and distributing their products using that system. "
What the hell is that about?
lapucelle
(18,186 posts)with whom you are personally acquainted from Amazon's workforce of 500,000+, and their primary complaint concerning wages is that the new people are making too much money too quickly. Got it.
is a clear statement written in standard English.
Those who decry the practices of a business entity run the risk of having their integrity questioned when they partner with that entity precisely because those very practices will make them the most money, in the shortest time, with the least effort.
And rightfully so.
irresistable
(989 posts)First, you sneer that my opinions on Amazon "don't make sense" and imagine that I must have "read that somewhere" (which I also have, BTW). Then you also deride my personal experience.
Your opinion apparently flows from your omniscience.
As for your "clear statement", who precisely do you imagine fits that description?
lapucelle
(18,186 posts)in assessing an argument. I am among them.
Similarly, many people fit the description, including (but not limited to) anti-Amazon protestors who hold Amazon Prime accounts and high profile Amazon critics (Donald Trump among them) who peddle their wares via the retail giant in order to more fully line their pockets.
If the shoe fits, wear it, be it a Lobb wingtip, a Doc Marten boot, or the brandless generic sneaker chosen for you by committee.
irresistable
(989 posts)You view the world from afar.
I am not an Amazon critic. I see them providing opportunity to small business owners and self published authors while pressuring their local competition to raise salaries.
I also believe in keeping pressure on them
lapucelle
(18,186 posts)Did you really just write that? All because I don't find idiosyncratic anecdotal evidence in support of a dubious claim convincing?
That's a terrible thing to say to or about someone, especially to or about an allied stranger whose only fault was besting you in a debate.
SMH.
irresistable
(989 posts)I am accurately describing your behavior with me.
Since you provided no evidence whatsoever for YOUR position...How exactly did you best me in a debate?
Condescension is a poor debate strategy.

(9,895 posts)The entire cramped field has me getting very nervous that an internal blood bath is going to erupt and leave our candidate wounded and vulnerable to Trump's asinine campaign of name calling and BS.
I have only one concern in 2020 - defeating Donald Trump, period. The reason? If we do not, the SCOTUS will be 7-2 for a generation+ by 2024. The ONLY thing that matters in our primaries is determining who is the best candidate to defeat Trump. Nothing else is even close and yet I see the threads already attacking the same old purity / not good enough with <fill in subset of party here> nonsense.
If we do not recognize the criticality of this time, we will lose, period. We cannot let that happen.

An awful lot of his support was from people who felt like they didn't have alot of other choices and were being taken a bit for granted. That isn't going to be true this time. And it doesn't look like he'll be running just against and HRC type candidate. There will be several "lanes" as we call them today and his may be way more narrow than he realizes.
History has a cruel track record for candidates that want a second swing at the ball. I just hope he is prepared for that.

If his end game is a third party run if he loses the Democratic primary, then I'm scared to death. Anyone who runs as a third party candidate and is "leftish" will hand the White House to the orange slob for another 4 years (assuming he's not in prison). I doubt Bernie would do that, but we'll still have the Green Party and others to worry about. In any case, as for the Democratic primary, the more the merrier. Some people have pointed out, rightly, I think, that Bernie's "radical" positions from 2016 are now mostly mainstream ideas. He put them on the agenda and deserves credit for that.
He also raised a big pile of money immediately after declaring his candidacy yesterday.
Despite that, he'll never be president, IMO.

(15,265 posts)I don't think he should be able to use the Democratic Party for his ambitions, though. He can't just decide to be a registered Democrat when it's convenient for things like being on the debate stage or easy access to a ballot line in every state.

(9,939 posts)His voice is important. Many of his good ideas have been adopted by other candidates.
I doesn't matter who gets the nomination. I will vote for the Democratic candidate no matter who it is.
He did not make Hillary lose. That is just pure bs.
People should stop infighting about this.
We need to really behind the candidate who wins the nomination. Period.

(23,059 posts)The left wing of the Democratic party is well represented without him. Dislike that PUtin and drumpf will use him to hurt the party, but think the other contenders are so strong he won't set the agenda this time around.

The quality of candidates is exceptional so far. I feel the more the merrier; I look forward to hearing ideas from our candidates and evaluating their stance compared to mine.
