Trump Is Not Stable -- and That Should Be a Huge News Story

Trump Is Not Stable — and That Should Be a Huge News Story
http://www.smirkingchimp.com/node/83754

If over the weekend you saw a rambling madman give a frighteningly incoherent, sweaty, two-hour shoutfest of a speech at a right-wing summit, then you viewed a president coming unglued on national television in a way that has probably never been seen before in United States history. And that is extraordinary cause for alarm.

But if, instead, you saw nothing more than a “fiery” Donald Trump give a “zigzagging,” “wide-ranging,” “campaign-like” address where the Republican really “let loose,” then you likely work for the D.C. press, which once again swung and missed when it came to detailing the escalating threat that Trump represents to the country.

Specifically, newsrooms today nearly uniformly refuse to address the mounting, obvious signs that Trump is a deeply unstable man, as the CPAC meltdown so obviously demonstrated. Most reporters simply do not want to mention it. “In most ways, it was just another campaign rally for the president, in flavor, content, and punchlines,” the Daily Beast reported, summing up Trump’s CPAC calamity. In other words: Nothing to see here, folks.

That was typical of CPAC coverage. “Trump derides Mueller probe, mocks Democrats and his former attorney general,” the Washington Post headline announced. The accompanying article didn’t include even the slightest hint that Trump’s speech was a flashing neon-red sign of a man teetering on the edge. That is a bionic-level attempt to normalize Trump and his CPAC disaster, where he referred to 2020 Democratic candidates as “maniacs,” suggested they “hate their country,” and accused the Democratic Party of supporting “extreme late-term abortion.”

That wasn’t just some “long-winded” or “rambling” speech. That was pure insanity, and the fact that a sitting president unleashed such a bizarre performance, punctuated by so many incomprehensible nonsequiturs, means his stability and capacity ought to be questioned—and it ought to be a pressing news story.

The textbook mental case needed his "fix" of support after the agony of being gone Wednesday while Michael Cohen was center of media attention and then after being called a failure over the NK summit. The CPAC performance was just another in a long line of his desperate attempts to get attention and unleash his frustration over his bad week in media employing his usual routine of blame, projection, bragging, shock and awe and playing the victim.

Decades ago, my parents and a groups of their friends saw Rickles in a dinner theater in Las Vegas. In his stand-up, he had chosen a particular couple in the audience to poke gentle fun at. When it was all over, the couple and their friends were informed that their dinner tab had been picked up by Mr. Rickles and, if they would be so kind, as to come back stage to meet him. When they arrived, Rickles greeted them warmly and apologized profusely for any embarrassment he may have caused them. They talked for about 15 minutes and parted laughing. Later, my mother said that Don Rickles was one of the sweetest, dearest men she had ever met.

Dump needed that stroking, needed those idiots cheering his idiocy; had the rubes stayed, he might still be there, croaking out bullshit and using the podium to hold himself up. One sick dude.

Plus, it's hard to imagine anyone speaking for a long time just so people wouldn't listen. Not unless it was part of some bizarre and complex plot that allowed something else to happen. I dunno. Maybe flying saucers to land in front of the White House.

The 7 Most Bewildering Moments From Trump’s CPAC Speech

https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2019/03/president-trump-repeatedly-veered-off-script-cpac/584014/

He lampooned Democratic proposals for a Green New Deal:

No planes. No energy. When the wind stops blowing, that is the end of your electric. Let’s hurry up. “Darling, darling, is the wind blowing today? I would like to watch television, darling” ... Their plan would remove every gas-powered car from American roads. Oh, that’s not so bad. They want you to have one car instead of two. And it should be electric. Okay. So tell people, no more cars, no more cars ... It would end air travel. But you’ll get on a train, don’t worry about it. You just have to cross off about 95 percent of the world. And it would force the destruction or renovation of virtually every existing structure in the United States. New York City would have to rip down buildings and rebuild ’em again. I don’t think so. This is the craziest plan. And yet I see senators that are there for 20 years, white hair. See, I don’t have white hair. I don’t have white hair. I see these white hairs, longtime senators, standing behind this young woman, and she’s ranting and raving like a lunatic, and these senators: “Yes, I agree with this. Yes I agree.” The crazy female senator from the state of Ohio. [Both of Ohio’s senators are men; it appears he was instead referring to Democratic Senator Mazie Hirono of Hawaii.] The state of Hawaii. She’s like a crazy person. What she said about men is so bad.

Both ideas are totally nuts only when taken to the ridiculous extremes proposed. Not everyone needs to give up owning a car and neither will we all be driving electric cars. Contrary to RWNJ, the universe is not a zero-sum game.

If everyone used an EV where appropriate, pollution and global warming would be much more tractable problems. A side benefit would be lower costs for petroleum in those situations where we have no suitable substitute.

Alas.

I can't afford an EV just for in-town driving, especially as the cheapest one is double what I've ever paid for a car. I take enough very long car trips that my gas car, and the ability to refill the tank in five minutes compared to many hours of re-charging, is what I, and lots of others need.

46. both ideas are PUSHED to extremes
Tue Mar 5, 2019, 04:01 PM

SUVs were pushed because of the profit margin, and because of an irrational tax deduction created by a GOPer Congress when SUVs were a new thing. It promoted gas guzzling at the time. Corporate fleets went from econo-cars to SUVs in just a few years. Marketing did the rest; check most parking lots and they are a sea of SUVs and pickups.

EVs could have been produced at competitive prices for decades. Instead, manufacturers kept up a steady noise of astroturfing against them, citing the lack of charging stations and the lack of batteries giving the equivalent range of a tank of gasoline. Both are specious arguments. The inability to completely displace petroleum fueled vehicles is a silly reason to not produce any EV. It's as goofy as claiming that no hamburgers should be produced because a hamburger is not a complete diet.

Typical commute distances in major metro areas range from 4.7 miles (Stockton, CA) to 12.8 miles (Atlanta, GA). That's a whole lot of people moving 5 or 6 days a week, within the range of even fairly crude, garage built EVs from the 1970s. Why haven't automobile manufacturers been catering to such a market for decades? Simple -- there are fewer revenue streams associated with an EV.

Tue Mar 5, 2019, 04:22 PM

My first seven years in the DC area I had no car and got along quite well. This was before the Metro opened. The only reason I finally got a car was I decided to go back to school part time, and it just wasn't going to be practical to get to school in the morning, get home, then get to the airport where I worked an afternoon shift.

If I ever leave my current city, I expect it will be to someplace with much better public transportation, in which case I'd give up owning a car and rent one if the need arose.

" No planes. Okay. Really....... try to read that and tell me that this is not a crazy man. You know it and most of us here at DU know it. It needs to be seen and discussed everywhere. The MSM needs to break down the entire rant and ask him about it - and NOT accept BS dodges and mis-directions.

Call him on it - let those who have not figured it out (or refuse to see and believe) see what a crazy fool he is.

We cannot put it in a corner and pretend it is not there.

It IS there - and we must let all see it - and continue the fight to do something about it.

rant and rave, he's just made a total fool of himself in the eyes of most Americans. What's new?

It's not often that rump has a ready audience, hence that's why he goes on and on forever at CPAC.

If one notices (and most of us on DU have), he's been going to way out of the way places to dig up loyal audiences and/or pay the audience members to sit in his rallies and participate. It is not hard work, all one has to do is act like a 5 year old child and viola, a paycheck! If I was doing this, I'd make sure I'd take cash by the way.

Also, we've all seen these people who are in their own little world out wherever we go, restaurants, bars, etc., totally absorbed on their phones, texting, etc. They could get hit by a car and killed because they are not paying attention to their surroundings (over 4000 of them are annually). This is rump, so self absorbed, so self centered, ME ME ME sickening ME. Like a spoiled brat, with a tarnished golden spoon in his mouth, nothing else.

Ignore him. Let's move on. The repugs are not here to help us either so ignore them. Let's repeat Nov. 2018 and keep fighting them in the meantime in the courts, in the arena of public opinion, in the House of representatives, everywhere where we can.

And what's funny about this whole thing, rump is his own worse enemy! A savory way to taste the fruits of defeat, eh, in Nov., 2020?
